A story about the relationship between Grandpa and his estranged grandson.
The story of a 15-year-old boy (Dirk) who, after his mother dies in a car accident, has to go and stay with his grandpa, whom he doesn't know at all. Grandpa is the boy's only remaining family member and lives on a farm. Grandpa was estranged from his daughter (Dirk's mother) and had no contact with his daughter or grandson. The story focuses on the boy's transition from a difficult and emotionally broken teenager to a young man, spiritually healed and equipped for life. At the same time, we witness how Grandpa's brokenness is healed - caused by the break with his daughter. A Time of Watermelons is a feel-good story, with a strong dose of humor, for a generation in which meaningful relationships between grandparents and grandchildren are a scarce commodity.
