A daughter who idolizes her father discovers, just before he dies, that he was leading a double life and had a hidden lover. Without knowing it, the heartbroken daughter becomes a friend to her father's other woman.

Inez de Pierrefond's mother forces her to marry a wealthy man who proves to be such a brute that after he is killed in a drunken brawl, Inez swears that she will never marry again. Later, she falls in love with John Hemingway, an Iowan who has come to Paris to study architecture, but when she tells him her views on marriage, he leaves her in shock. His friend, Charles Abbey, convinces him that Inez's ideas are quite logical, and for a time, the two live together in perfect happiness. Upon the couple's return to Delphi, Iowa, however, the town gossips assume that the beautiful and cultured Parisian is an adventuress, and when they learn of her book, Free Love , they call a meeting to inform John's mother of Inez's low character. Hearing of their plan, Inez roundly denounces the villagers as hypocrites and then explains her views to Mrs. Hemingway, who lovingly forgives her. Mrs. Hemingway's tender devotion to her son so moves Inez, however, that she eventually consents to the marriage ceremony.

This film is about a fake note that connects four stories, each involving characters dealing with loss, regret and life's harsh realities all in the name of love. We explore their life's with this fake note. In the climax a horrific car accident connects that all stories.

Yuki Morimura is by all accounts a disappointment. The only thing the substitute teacher has going for him is that he is the concertmaster of an amateur orchestra. To the shock of the Orchestra, music prodigy Kei Tonoin has been recruited to be their first true conductor. Kei graduated from a prestigious music university abroad and his arrogant totalitarian attitude drives Yuki crazy. Worse, he threatens the potential relationship Yuki seeks with a girl from the Orchestra. In abrupt anger, Yuki abandons the group in the middle of rehearsal. Kei does not take this lightly as he has long been secretly lusting over Yuki. That night, Kei's rage and passion combine to change Yuki's life forever. In a battle for dominance, neither man is willing to admit their faults or face the truth, building to one shocking ending.
