1942, the German command is eager to take revenge after the catastrophic defeat at Stalingrad. To prepare the ground for the upcoming counteroffensive, several groups of highly trained German saboteurs are sent into the Soviet rear. Their task is to carry out a series of sabotage operations, the ultimate goal of which is unknown, but the success of the upcoming German offensive directly depends on it. A reconnaissance group under the command of Andrey Losev enters into a deadly battle with the German saboteurs. The enemy is strong and cunning and seems to have some kind of mystical sense that helps him to always be one step ahead. But our scouts are indomitably on the trail of this dangerous "beast".

1943. Anna Petrova is a combat pilot who was seriously injured. She returned to the rear and works as a leading engineer at an aircraft factory, where new Krechety aircraft are being prepared for testing. The plant management, not knowing the consequences of her injury, instructs Anna, together with Major Zotov, to drive the Krechet prototype to the front. In addition to the desire to defeat the enemy and return home with victory, Anna also pursues a personal goal. She is determined to get even with Major Briggel, the German pilot who killed her lover.

November 1941. German troops continue their offensive and come close to Moscow. After completing a combat mission in Kharkov, Elagina and Mirsky arrive in Rostov-on-Don. They will have to survive the first occupation of Rostov, investigate a series of complicated crimes and get on the trail of saboteurs, whom representatives of the military prosecutor's office will judge "according to the laws of wartime."

Summer and autumn 1944. Odessa. The city, liberated by the Red Army from the German-Romanian occupation, begins a new lease of life. But, according to military intelligence, a network of Abwehr agents recruited from among the local population and professionally trained saboteurs remained in the city after the Nazis retreated. Now a special task force is being formed in Moscow consisting of members of SMERSH and the military prosecutor's office investigators, who will be sent to Odessa to strengthen the local authorities and the police. The group, under the command of SMERSH Captain Viktor Zvyaginov, includes two investigators from the military prosecutor's office, Svetlana Elagina and Ivan Rokotov, who not only find the trail of Abwehr agents, but simultaneously solve a number of criminal cases. Along with their professional military activities, the romance between Svetlana and Ivan, who lost each other during the Red Army's retreat from Kharkov in 1941, is rekindled when they are reunited after a long separation.

In August 1945, Marshal Vasilevskiy holds a meeting at the Red Army headquarters to discuss the operation to liberate Manchuria. The offensive is planned in a few days. Vasilevskiy asks about a chemical plant in the suburbs of Harbin. According to intelligence, the Japanese are developing dangerous chemical weapons at this plant, and if it explodes, hundreds of thousands of people will die. Vasilevskiy demands that the plant be liquidated, preventing the explosion of chemical weapons depots.

Autumn 1941. Miraculously escaping from the Kiev boiler, investigators from the military prosecutor's office Rokotov, Mirsky and Elagina arrive in Kharkov, where evacuation is already in full swing. They have in their hands important information about the activities of the German espionage organization. New circumstances force them to linger in Kharkov. Indeed, together with the enterprises being evacuated, under the guise of refugees, further groups of German saboteurs are moving further east, whose purpose is sabotage and sabotage at military factories. Trying to open the channels for transporting scouts to the Soviet rear, Rokotov and Elagina find out that the organization operating in Kharkov is directly related to the Kiev group that they discovered a few hours before the city was surrendered. And the curator of both of these groups occupies a high post in the Main Military Prosecutor's Office.
