The Second Spell
Kiyo is beginning to think that Zatch, who shoots lightning from his mouth, attracts too much attention and is way too much trouble to bring with him to school. Giving Zatch a homemade toy (Volcan 300) to play with, he ditches Zatch and heads off to class. But all eyes are nevertheless on Kiyo! It turns out that his picture is on the front page of the paper, after saving the day at the bank! Kiyo is the talk of the school, and suddenly he has all the girls' attention! Okay, so maybe for making friends, having Zatch around isn't such a terrible thing, after all. Good thing, because Zatch has followed Kiyo to school anyway! Suzy tells Zatch 'Since you came along, Kiyo's become really popular!' But on the way home, Kiyo and Zatch run into Hosokawa and the ice-shooting mamodo, Reycom. Hosokawa says 'I'm not after you, Kiyo, just that kid Zatch.' Unlike Zatch, Reycom is very much aware of his powers. 'The stronger your feelings are,' Hosokawa explains, 'the stronger becomes your ability to wield your book of spells and that kid's powers!' As Hosokawa vows to capture Zatch for his own selfish goals, Zatch's 'Zaker' meets Reycom's spells in a terrible duel! But when Hosokawa captures Zatch and the red spell book, he can't make Zatch's powers work! It seems that all is lost for Kiyo, until he finds that he can read a new spell from the red book - 'Rashield!' . Then Hosokawa's blue spell book catches fire, and Reycom disappears. From afar, a serious and mysterious blonde-haired girl is watching everything that's happening...

It's Sunday. Zatch begged and begged, so finally Kiyo agreed to take him and Suzy to the botanical garden. When Kiyo used to ditch school, he would often come to the botanical garden alone to read and Ivy used to watch over him. Zatch instantly befriends Ivy. But something disastrous has disturbed the peace of this tranquil botanical garden. The roots and branches of the trees have turned into living creatures and started taking visitors to the garden hostage! It's all the work of a mamodo named Sugino who has the power to control plants and his human partner Haru. So Zatch and Kiyo face Sugino and Haru in battle, but with the plants on their side Sugino and his partner are powerful opponents! Still, Zatch and Kiyo are able to beat back Sugino's successive attacks, and finally free the visitors from the clutches of the plants. However, right as Kiyo shouts the spell 'Zaker!' the electricity that normally shoots from Zatch's mouth fizzles out. Haru doesn't lose the opportunity to make a comeback! (A spell loses power the more it is invoked. Once its power runs out, a spell can't be summoned; no matter how hard you try!) Having used up all their strength, Zatch and Kiyo are in big trouble! But just then Ivy, snatches Haru's spell book away from him and says to Kiyo - 'You're not alone!' Her strength of heart transmits to Kiyo, warms his heart and brings his emotions to a boil.
