Psych Ruins

LOGLINE: Independent horror filmmaker Nicholas (Nick) Gentry plans to make his first box office hit film at the abandoned Kings Park Psychiatric Center with his newest discovery and object of his intense desire, the beautiful aspiring actress Lisa Lane (Natalie Peri), but his plans for fame and hers are shattered when supernatural forces from a love story of times past take control of their lives with a fate worse than death. TAGLINE: A love wrought with pain destroys others in its wake. SYNOPSIS: THE YEAR IS 1945 at the Kings Park Psychiatric Center in Long Island, NY. Senior Doctor of Psychiatry, Jonathan Stiles, is meeting in a counseling room with the family of Mary Chambers, a beautiful young woman who has just been registered at the Center from a referral from her family physician. Jonathan, who has just been assigned to her care, introduces himself to Marys handsome husband Robert Chambers and Marys father and mother. The family discusses the reasons for Marys need for care at the Center as being a series of progressively violent outbursts stemming from a nervous breakdown following the loss of her child at birth. Jonathan assures the family that Mary will be well cared for, and will be back home with them in no time at all. Jonathan begins regular therapy sessions with Mary in an attempt to restore her to normalcy, and a strong bond of friendship begins to form between them. Jonathan is immediately overcome by Marys beauty, and he begins to develop a romantic obsession for her, although Mary respects her marriage to Robert and avoids any romantic feelings for Jonathan on her part. Marys husband Robert visits her at the Center several times each week to dine with her and to spend time with her walking and talking in the garden and in her room. Jonathan begins to develop a deep sense of anger and jealously when seeing Robert with Mary, and inwardly he wants the visits to stop. He feels as if Roberts visits are whats keeping him from making any headway at winning Marys affection. The last thing that Jonathan wants to see is for Mary to get well and return home to her husband and family, where he will never see her again. Jonathan wants desperately to end Marys connection with her husband. Jonathan sees that Mary is not developing any romantic interest with him, and he blames it on her husbands frequent visits with her. After weeks of frustration, and pacing back and forth in his room fuming about his problem, he decides to take drastic action. Jonathans plan is to erase the memory of Marys husband from her mind, and ensure that her mental state will prevent her from ever leaving the Center. Late one night, Jonathan slips into her room, gives Mary an injection to keep her quiet, and hooks up the equipment, and applies shock therapy. After seeing to it that she is stable, he slips quietly out of her room, and doesnt see her until the next day at their regularly scheduled therapy session. The next day, when Jonathan walks into Marys room, he can see a definite change in her. She doesnt remember her name, or why shes there, and doesnt even remember Jonathan. A smile comes over his face and he is highly elated at the result of his efforts. He will now be able to keep Mary at the Center indefinitely, and he can begin to teach her to love only him, and not remember her husband and the love that she once had for him. Two days later, Marys husband comes to visit, and discovers that she no longer has any memory of him. He calls Marys parents to have them come down to the Center to see if she will remember them, and she doesnt. Jonathan convinces Marys family that this is only a temporary setback, and that he will be able to bring back her memory, but it will take time. Marys family leave the Center very confused and saddened by the events, but take Jonathan at his word that he will be able to help her. Jonathan begins to work with Mary to try to bring her back to normalcy, but realizes that something is wrong. Mary is not responding to treatment and Jonathans counseling, and she begins to become erratic and angry at everyone, especially Jonathan. Mary is becoming increasingly more angry and violent, and attempts to kill Jonathan one day with a pair of shears she had stolen from the craft room. Jonathan becomes despondent, and realizes that he has destroyed the only thing he ever loved. Very late one night, Jonathan is dressed in a tuxedo and pushing a wheelchair when he comes into Marys room. He gives Mary an injection to keep her quiet, takes a beautiful white gown out of a bag, and dresses Mary in it. Jonathan lifts Mary from her bed and puts her in the wheelchair before taking her up to the 4th floor of Building # 93 to a quiet seldom-used section of the building. He looks at Marys beautiful face, takes out a pre-written suicide note, and reads it in a soft-spoken voice. Mary, my beautiful sweet Mary, I loved you and wanted you more than life itself, but you had already made your choices, and I was not and could not ever be a part of them. I tried to change things but only made matters worse, making you into a thing of evil. Now there is only one choice for the both of us. I will lay you to rest, and I alongside you. Perhaps now we will have our time together. Jonathan gives a lethal injection to Mary and then to himself, and then lies down next to her as he looks lovingly into her face as she lies there sleeping. A few tears begin to flow down his cheek as he reluctantly watches Marys reaction to the injection and as he begins to feel it come over him as well. Moments later, they are both gone. THE YEAR IS NOW 2016 Wannabe Long Island filmmaker Nicholas (Nick) Gentry has only made a few low-budget/no-budget short horror films in his brief career as a director, and his dream is to make the ultimate feature horror film classic that will put him on the map. At a local filmmakers group mixer, Nick sees his chances to finally make that great film he has dreamed of when he is introduced to a beautiful young aspiring actress named Lisa Lane (Natalie Peri). The two hit it off famously as they both expound upon their love for horror films and their desire to succeed. Nick proposes to give Lisa the lead role in a new feature horror film that he is currently writing. Nick tells her he plans on filming at the nearby abandoned Kings Park Psychiatric Center on the 20th Anniversary of its closing in the Fall of 1996. As NIck tells Lisa about the history of the Center and the many reports of hauntings there, Lisa becomes intrigued and the two begin to put together plans for the film project. Nick cant help but be attracted to the beautiful actress, and begins to take on a romantic interest in her in addition to his interest in using her in the film project. Lisa has no such romantic interest in Nick, and makes that obvious to him on several instances when Nick makes advances. Nick becomes more and more frustrated from his many failed attempts to get Lisa romantically interested in him, so he tries to put his frustration aside in order to concentrate on the film project. Nick is persistent in pursuing Lisa as the two of them continue to work together in planning the film, and as they begin to frequently visit and scout locations at the site of the abandoned Psychiatric Center in Long Island with an intriguing 70-year history and tales of hauntings and ghostly sightings over the 30 years since its closure. Lisa and Nick become more and more intrigued with the stories and legends of the Center, as they pour over newspaper records at the local library and read about tales of a mysterious lady in white roaming the halls of Building # 93s 4th floor. As Nick and Lisa continue their location scouting visits to the Center, their presence there on the Center grounds and within the abandoned buildings begins to have a mysterious effect on Nick. He seems to be taking on a new personality, and he begins talk to Lisa about the Psychiatric Center as though it is alive, having a soul, and being aware negatively and opposed to their presence there. Also, Nicks frustration from Lisas resistance to his romantic aspirations is wearing away at his nerves. Being excited about the new film project and her prospects for a lead role in a great film story, Lisa pays little or no attention to Nicks ramblings, and doesnt notice the changes in Nicks personality and speech at first. During their visits to the Center during the day they occasionally get the feeling that they are being watched, and think at times that they hear mysterious sounds and sometimes think they see glimpses of shadow movements. Nick suggests to Lisa that in order to gain research for writing the script, to get into the spirit of the film project, and to help Lisa get into her character role, that they spend the night at the Center. Lisa, who is already frightened by the Center, agrees reluctantly. So the two decide to go home and pack up a few things and meet later to drive to the Center to spend the night there. Back at Nicks apartment, he is in his bathroom brushing his teeth while standing in front of his mirror with his bathroom door standing open. When Nick looks up into the mirror, he sees a lady in a white gown standing in the doorway. He quickly turns around and there is no one there. Nick is very shaken by this sight, and immediately goes into the kitchen, makes himself a stiff drink, takes out his note pad and begins writing, as he mumbles to himself nervously, This is good, very very good, this has to be in my film. Later that day about an hour before sunset, Nick and Lisa arrive at the Center, and decide to leave most of their belongings except for their flashlights in the car while they take a walk around to determine which building and which area in that building where they want to set up camp. Nick asks Lisa to walk ahead of him while he films her with a small hand-held camera so he can get some ideas for future camera angles and lighting. Lisa walks ahead while Nick eventually and uncontrollably directs Lisa toward Building # 93, and eventually up to the 4th floor. As they enter the building, the sun has set and its now dark outside, and pitch black inside the building except for the light from their flashlights and the camera light. As they reach the landing for the 4th floor, Nicks behavior and his facial expressions begin to change, and his voice takes on a different and lower tone. The obvious change in Nicks voice causes Lisa to turn around, and thats when she notices the different look in his face and eyes which seem to be glazed over as if he is in a trance. Lisa becomes frightened by Nicks new and different behavior, and asks him whats wrong with him. He doesnt respond to her questions, and instead continues to ramble in his speech as if he is an entirely different person. Without talking he begins walking toward Lisa as he reaches in his coat pocket and pulls out a hypodermic needle. Lisa asks him, Whats that? Nick says, I knew you would be frightened tonight. This is a very scary place. This is just a little something to help you relax so you wont be frightened. Lisa says, I dont need that, and in fact I dont want to stay here, I want you to take me home, right now! Nick continues to walk toward her and says, I cant do that. We came here to do research, and thats what were going to do. Lisa turns and starts running down the hallway, with Nick walking slowly (not running) behind her. As she turns the corner, she can hear Nick walking slowly behind her, and can hear the click of his hard-soled shoes on the tile floor. Nick shouts out, Theres no place for you to go Lisa. Ive got the car keys. Youre stranded here with me. Lisa, goes through a doorway into a back staircase, and starts down the stairs. Her small flashlight provides very little light in the dark stairway. As she makes her way down the staircase, she hears the sounds of a baby crying. As she reaches the 3rd floor landing and she is about to exit out into the hallway, she hears Nick coming down the stairway behind her. Lisa runs down the hallway, trying several doors that are locked. Finally, she finds a door thats unlocked, and she enters. She shines her flashlight around the room, which apparently used to be an operating room. She hears Nicks footsteps getting closer, so she hides behind a cabinet and turns off her flashlight. Nick arrives and opens the door to the room, and the sound of the door hinges creaking can be heard as the door opens slowly. Nicks voice has now taken on a deep demonic tone as he says, I know youre in here Mary. I wont hurt you, I just want to give you something to relax. Lisa nervously struggles to catch her breath without giving away her location. She can see the light from Nicks flashlight panning around the room as he searches for her. He rounds the corner and shines his flashlight in Lisas face. Nick says, There you are Mary. Nick walks toward Lisa while shining his flashlight in her face, while she shines her flashlight in his face. Lisa says, Im not Mary, Im Lisa. Nick can see the fear in Lisas face and can tell by her nervous, labored breathing that she is scared to death. He shines his flashlight in her face and sees her fear, but she is not looking at him. She is looking over his right shoulder. Lisa moves her flashlight from Nicks face to the left over his right shoulder to see the frightening face of the lady in white standing behind Nick with an axe raised in the air. Nick can tell that Lisas look of fear is not because of him, and he turns slowly to his right to see what she is looking at. When he sees the lady in white with axe raised about to take his head off, he cringes in fear and his face is suddenly filled with pain as he clutches his chest and falls to the ground. Lisa looks down at Nicks lifeless body and then looks at the lady in white who is staring directly into Lisas eyes with the axe still raised in the air. Lisa backs away as the lady in white moves slowly toward her, and then Lisas attention is drawn to Nicks body. The transparent figure of Jonathan Stiles rises up out of Nicks body, and he looks directly into Lisas eyes before he turns toward the lady in white. The two spirits look at each other and then turn and move slowly together toward the door, moving through the door without opening it. Lisa falls to her knees in front of Nicks body crying hysterically, as the scene fades to outside the building where an ambulance and several cop cars are parked with flashing lights. The CAMERA moves toward one of the cop cars where Lisa sits locked in the back seat staring straight ahead without emotion. THE END
