Xam'd: Lost Memories

Akiyuki, a boy who always seems late to everything, helps an odd pale girl without an ID band onto a bus. Meanwhile a postal airship comes in to Sentan Island where Akiyuki lives. On board is a young woman named Nakiami. She senses danger and leaves the ship, much to the captain's annoyance. It turns out she is right. The girl Akiyuki helped onto the bus causes an explosion, injuring many. Akiyuki tries to help the girl once more but she touches his forehead, turning him into a Xamdou, a white creature that seems to frighten many people. Haru, Akiyuki's friend, gets on the bus to figure out where he went but soldiers arrive and things start to get hectic as the skies above fill with the Northern Government's war ships.

Sentan Island, supposedly a Free Zone in the war against the Southern and Northern governments becomes a very hot spot. The Northern Government attacks with humaform weapons, odd large monsters whose laser-like weapons cause explosions. Soldiers all ready at the scene of a bus explosion (seemingly unrelated) are surprised when a pod of a humaform weapon land nearby. All ready unnerved, one shots Akiyuki, a boy who in the last episode was turned into a Xam'd by a pale girl. Haru, Akiyuki's friend, knocks out (or accidentally kills) the soldier who shot Akiyuki when the Xam'd recovers. She seems to know that it is her friend though she didn't see the transformation. The humaform attacks and Akiyuki gets caught up with it in a battle. Haru goes after them and winds up having to get protected by Akiyuki. However, after the humaform is killed, Akiyuki starts to turn into red crystal. Nakiami from the postal ship arrives and saves the day by asking Akiyuki if he wants to live (after Haru explains that the Xam'd was once human). Nakiami turns Akiyuki back into a human and takes him away, unconscious. Haru also passes out after Nakiami does something to her. Nakiami returns to the postal ship to an angry captain but she is allowed to keep Akiyuki. Eventually Akiyuki has to wake up but what will he think of being kidnapped? His parents look for him, unaware that he's been taken from the island, but that doesn't work out as planned, as the two adults have been separated for years. They can't seem to work together. Meanwhile another Xam'd has been found by a doctor and a commander but it has already crystallized. The doctor has plans for it however.

Nakiami has cared for Akiyuki but he doesn't remember the incident and doesn't understand why he's being kept on the ship. Akushiba, a crew member on the 'Zanbani', teaches Akiyuki how to work on a postal ship and says that Akiyuki will be there for a long time. Akiyuki hates the idea and goes to the captain. Ishu doesn't care. Nakiami has already spoken to her and though Ishu thinks having Akiyuki on board could be dangerous, she listens to Nakiami and won't let him go back home. On the island, Haru is let out of the hospital. She meets Akiyuki's father. Dr. Ryuzo has been looking for his son all night, worried. Haru also goes to Akiyuki's mother, Fusa, and tells her she thinks Akiyuki is still alive. Fusa believes her. Haru promises to return Akiyuki's arm band to him. In politics, Tijiro Kakisu, the only southern survivor in the Battle of Barador 17 years ago, is now a commander. He is placed in charge of Sentan Island. He promises to help end the war there. It doesn't seem to matter to him if his methods are unethical or not. He and Dr. Kanba have revived the stone Xam'd and plan on using it in experiments. Dr. Kanba, in a previous episode, hinted that the Xam'd looked just like a mother protecting her baby. On the postal ship, Akiyuki and the rest are attacked by a flying humaform. Akiyuki is captured and Nakiami rescues him once more. However, Akiyuki believes her about having a Xam'd inside. Later that night, he learns about another Xam'd Nakiami cared for and how he finally went crazy.

In this episode, watchers learn how the humaforms are controlled. More white haired children leave their hidden city and go to a battle ground where in bird-like suits they collect Hiruko from dead bodies. Akiyuki and Nakiami visit Tenshin an old women/ spiritual guide, living in the bottom of the ship. Nakiami says this is for his Xam'd training, but for awhile Akiyuki can't understand why as he still keeps doing the postal ship duties he was given. Tenshin wants to know what the Xam'd inside Akiyuki wants and tells him to figure it out. She also tells him to keep thinking as it will stop him from turning to stone. He also finally gets better treatment from the crew members who try to help him out. Later a Tessik ship interferes with them and Nakiami, a Tessik herself, wants to go talk with them. The captain forbids it and Nakiami tells her she's leaving. Akiyuki tries to write a letter home but he's not sure what to say. On the island, Haru sees an old school associate, Shidara. This young woman has lost all her family in the attack and has gone crazy and is without a home. Commander Kakisu comes to the island and takes over from the general. Haru, Furuichi (a friend), and Midori (Haru's younger sister) watch. Later, Kakisu sends his aide to get Dr. Ryuzo, the man who saved him in Barador to ask if they'll work together.

Commander Kakisu starts taking control in this episode. Haru and Furuichi become part of a clean up crew, clearing away rubble from the last attack. While they do that, they come across Shidara she suddenly transforms into a humaform and attacks them. Could this have something to do with the commander and Dr. Kanba? Nakiami goes to the Tessik ship, meeting with their captain, Zeygend. Akiyuki finally writes his letter, but the truck taking the letters to the south leaves before he can get it there. It turns out the 'Zanbani' is going north and if it doesn't get on the truck, it won't get home for another 6 months. The captain Ishu says they're leaving in the morning. No one knows if Nakiami will return to them in time.

Haru and Furuichi start training for the army in the elite group of humaform fighters: mainsouls. Haru thinks this is the only way off the island so she can start her search for Akiyuki. Furuichi has a different goal in mind. He wants to get closer to Haru. Akiyuki's letter reaches home and Haru runs off to show his parents. After she leaves, Dr. Ryuzo tells his separated wife how he once worked for the Northern Government as a doctor and helped developed the humaforms. Dr. Zanba revives the stone Xam'd all the way and it starts to escape. Haru and Furuichi and their squad fight against it in a drill turned real. Akiyuki, meanwhile, goes on a side trip with Nakiami to the ground. There they see humaforms turning to stone. Nakiami wants to save one that is still alive by "dismantling" it. Akiyuki, not understanding, interferes and using his Xam'd arm, kills it. Nakiami is angry with him and Akiyuki realizes he doesn't know much of anything.

Haru recognizes the test-type Xam'd for what it is and refuses to fight. Furuichi goes all for it, revealing a hatred for humaforms. No one listens to Haru and the fight goes on. Akiyuki winds up getting all the letters sent to him from home. He reads one from Haru, inviting him to meet her at Tsumebara Pass, a place not on Sentan Island. Akiyuki wants to go but Nakiami doesn't think he'll be safe on his own. She doesn't think he has control. However she lets him go, but things don't go right from the start. He is attacked by a man who suddenly turns into a humaform which seems to be a common thing where he's at. Nakiami, worried when the tracker she gave to him is no longer responding, sneaks off of the ship to find him. Dr. Ryuzo starts his experiments with the Ututu seeds. Midiori, Haru's sister, is being watched by the commander's aide for some unknown purpose. What is Kakisu and Dr. Kanba planning to do to her?

Haru, Furuichi, and their squad believe their on a mission to rescue another ASP Mainsoul squad from the mines, but Commander Kakisu has lied to them. They are actually looking for the green soulstone which will help Dr. Kanba's experiments. With the squad is a Northern Ongoro-user who will help them search out humaforms. Furuichi expresses his scorn. Nakiami searches for Akiyuki, finding his backpack but not him. She goes to the Pass. Captain Ishu lands the 'Zanbani' and questions the crew to where Nakiami went. Akiyuki meanwhile with his rescuers go to the Pass as well. He finds Haru and saves her from a humaform. Then Furuichi sees Akiyuki and attacks him. Furuichi doesn't think Akiyuki is human any more and hates him. Haru tries to stop Furuichi from shooting Akiyuki but he knocks her away. Akiyuki's arm slowly turns to stone. Help comes from an unlikely place as an unknown Xam'd appears and tells Akiyuki to run. Nakiami, meanwhile, finds the ones who helped Akiyuki and speaks to them. She finds Akiyuki and must save him from death once more. Haru is punished for helping Akiyuki as Furuichi sells out his one time friend to the commander.

A man with long hair sneaks onto the 'Zanbani'. It is none other than Raigyo, the Xam'd Nakiami once cared for and who'd disappeared for two years. He is at peace with himself now but when Madame Tenshin asks what his Xam'd wants, he can give her no answer. He brings gifts to all the crew and Akiyuki is a bit put out that everyone accepts Raigyo back so quickly. Everyone also tries to get them to get a bit closer and become friends. Haru, meanwhile, is ostracized by Furuichi and almost everyone else in the army. The commander's aide tries to make friends with her and the commander tries to explain that Akiyuki cannot be trusted. Akiyuki and Akushiba spy on Nakiami and Raigyo.

This episode begins five years earlier with Raigyo's transformation and Akushiba narrating how Nakiami found him. After, because Raigyou loves taking pictures he takes one of the whole crew together. He shows Akiyuki how their Hiruko, or the Xam'd shows through in the picture as a dot of light on their arms. They talk and seem to finally get along. Furuichi is still being rude to Haru and she is sad. Furuichi is excelling in his training compared to Haru. She completes her training and becomes a full member of the Mainsoul squad. At dinner she remembers the accident that stole her mother from her and crippled her sister and how Akiyuki tried to help her through it. Commander Kakisu had spoken to Haru earlier that day and threatened her if she didn't forget about Akiyki he'd have to court martial her. In her depression and desperation she cuts her hair to fit in, making the commander believe she's finally moved on. Fusa and Dr. Ryuzo, Akiyuki's parents, meet and try to get along, but Fusa is a bit stiff with him. Ryuzo goes to a memorial of the Barador Battle and meets the general there. They start working together. On the 'Zanbani' the Northerners attack with humaforms and Raigyo tries to teach Akiyuki how to use his Xam'd abilities.

The flying humaform attacks the 'Zanbani' and Raigyo leaves Akiyuki to deal with it. Nakiami leaves the ship although Captain Ishu told her there was nothing to worry about. Nakiami convinces Akiyuki not to kill the humaform, but place a Ututu seed under its skin. He does but the humaform explodes. This is Nakiami's "dissasembling" but it didn't go as planned. She believes if she continues to study she could get a Ututu seed that would return a humaform to its original form and cure it. The Zanbani is not out of danger yet. There are more Northern ships. They attack with more humaforms. While smaller ones invade the ship, Akiyuki and Raigyo in Xam'd form fight off the flying ones. The ship is damaged and starts going down. Inside the ship, Ishu is destroying humaforms. Nakiami tries to make her stop, but the captain doesn't listen. Nakiami can hear the humaforms and their pain and it hurts her inside. The boy on the ship disappears and his mother looks for him. As a last resort the children hide in Madame Tenshin's room, deep in the ship. Nakiami gives them something that will protect them before she and the captain argue. Later, Ishu finds the humaform user controlling them. It is a young girl and she wants the two Xam'd. What will the captain do with her and what will happen to the failing ship? On the island as Haru joins the soldiers in the barracks, she asks the commander to watch over Midori.

Furuichi hides in his darkened room but just yesterday he was promoted to Sergeant. Why is he hiding and why is he in pain? Could it have something to do with Dr. Kanba? Furuichi asked to see the doctor in a previous episode to help with his training and now he's acting suspicious. Haru is ordered to go see what is the matter with him. She realizes and tells him it makes no difference to her what he is. The 'Zanbani', stranded on a deserted beach cannot fly and the mechanic tries to fix it. The crew settle in for a long vacation and listen in on radio propaganda. Akiyuki is given no rest as he is required to dig a grave for someone who died. Nakiami is attacked by a black liquid-like monster. It swallows her and she seems lost. Ishu and Raigyo talk about Ishu's old days as an anti-government agent. He invites her to come with him so they can kill the Nornthern emperor. On Sentan Island Dr. Ryuzo finally visits Cammander Kakisu to talk about what happened in the battle and what's going to happen now. On the beach, Akiyuki finds a chance to go back to the island and takes it. He's finally going home, but what reception will he find when he gets there?

In this episode, half way through the series, Akiyuki returns to Sentan Island 6 months after he left. He has to sneak around to see his friends and Midori is mad at being left out after Haru makes her leave. The army catches wind of what's going on and have a hunt for Akiyuki, placing guards at places he'd go: Mother's house, Father's house, Haru's house, and they even have her followed. However, Akiyuki get's around them by getting to Dr. Ryuzo's house first and then sneaking out the back. He never does visit his mother and she is angry and sad all at the same time and tries to find him, hurting herself in the process. Haru is the last person Akiyuki visits. They meet at the Barador memorial. Furuichi shows up to ruin the moment and things start getting dangerous as not only is something wrong with his body, but his mind. Something odd is revealed in the story: the pale girl from the beginning didn't die after all. Dr. Ryuzo is trying to heal her, but she is in a coma. No one knows that he has her and for now she is safe.

The episode starts with a memory and a line that is important to Furuichi. Then back in the present Furuichi changes into a Xam'd fueled by hate and unable to change his face into a Xamdou's. Akiyuki and he fight when Furuichi takes Haru and hides her inside himself. Nakiami figures out a way to help Furuchi and turn him back into human with the Ututu seed. Haru is fine. Then the army comes. Akiyuki is seemingly knocked unconscious but later kidnaps the commander. Haru and Furuichi are taken away and Nakiami leaves the island when Akiyuki tells her to. The last part has Akiyuki fired at by a Mainsoul and falling into a river only to be found later almost human, having forgotten his name.

Akiyuki, unaware of who he is and what he is, has become a slave. The slave traders go north and Akiyuki makes a strange friend. A black creature with one eye that floats in the air. It brings him comfort and later someone that takes him to safety. On the island, Commander Kakisu is chided by the army counsel. He promises to take better control and help finish the war. He makes Haru a prisoner. Nakiami, on her way north as well, runs out of fuel for her Kayak, a flying machine that's been with her throughout the series. She lands and becomes stranded in a town that hates those from Tessik. She meets an orphaned Tessik boy who is also a Xam'd and protects him one night. He and she then go off to find the Tessik village.

Commander Kakisu receives a Jibashiri, one of the pale children, from the south who was captured while gathering Hiruko. Kakisu tries to see if the Jabashiri can be turned into a humaform but Dr. Kanba has other plans with the boy and draws the commander's attention to Midori who is excelling in her training. As Nakiami and Yango, the boy Xam'd, are crossing the mountains to Tessik Village, they see many Southern ships heading their way. As they get ever closer to the village, Nakiami is having doubts that they will even find a way inside. Dr. Ryuzo treats his wife who hurt her feet trying to find Akiyuki. She remains stubborn and just tells him to leave the bandages in the mailbox after he shows her the pale child he's keeping alive. Haru, still a captive, is contacted by the pale boy and he warns her about Midori as well as his Nazuna, the girl Dr. Ryuzo is keeping.

Dr. Kanba speaks to the pale boy but Kakisu is watching and is suspicious of them. He even threatens the doctor at one point. Akiyuki, now in the home of Sumako, an old woman, finds things to occupy his time while he tries to figure out who he is. Unforuntatly his job is not very uplifting because as he delivers letters, the people who receive them cry. Then one day something strange happens. His floating, black companion starts to talk and thats when the trouble starts. Meanwhile, Haru and the commander confront and his aide gains respect for the young woman. She helps Haru out. In Dr. Ryuzo's clinic, Nazuna starts talking but it's actually the boy being held captive by Kakisu using her body.

This is the episode of sisters. Haru escapes from her cell and sees her sister. Midori sees her as well and doesn't look pleased. No one at all realizes that Haru was held captive and she makes a clean getaway. She runs to Dr. Ryuzo clinic to see Nazuna. There she makes her decision to look for Akiyuki but she needs help. The general gives her away off the island but before she goes, Haru sees her sister and becomes devastated. Midori is angry with Haru and won't listen to her and so won't stop going to the commander and training. Yango and Nakiami have entered the Tessik village a place where in the middle of winter it is spring. There Nakiami meets her younger sister, Sun-Maned or Kujireika. It is obvious that the sister is jealous of Nakiami and in the end reveals something stunning she's been working on. Nakiami has to choose to follow or give up Tessik. The village also reveals something about Nakiami. She was meant to become one of the pale children but she left Lady Sannova, the Jibashiri's leader, before she could. On the fallen 'Zanbani' Ishu and Raigyo leave and join the anti-government army in the North. Yunbo takes over the captain's job, angry that Ishu left without warning.

Commander Kakisu and Midori meet and he says how grateful he is that she has decided to help him. She is given a contract to sign. Dr. Kanba begs the pale boy to forgive him for sacrificing Midori instead. It was the boy's job to protect her but he failed. In the North, Haru is making her way on an old Kayak through enemy lines to find Akiyuki on information given to her through Nazuna. Her Kayak fails in a valley full of sleeping Humaforms. Akiyuki and his floating companion have a talk where the 'friend' wants him to remember his name or else jump from the water tower. With every incorrect name Akiyuki takes a step until finally he jumps toward his death. Nakiami finally has to make her choice to follow her sister or not. In this episode we also learn who Sumako's son is-- Commander Kakisu.

The pale boy, through Nuzuna asks Dr. Ryuzo to save Midori. Commander Kakisu wants her completely transformed for the Great Pilgrimage in 10 days but Dr. Kanba says it's two early to send her out. Kakisu has his own way of persuading the doctor. The general resigns, one of many others who leave the commander's ranks. Dr. Ryuzo meets Midori's father later, and it's assumed the doctor warns the father. In the north, Nakiami and Yango witness the southern army attack Tessik village, even when they surrender. Kujireika takes things into her own hands while her people flee, revealing a secret she knows of Nakiami. Only one soldier stands by her as the rest leave the city. Akiyuki and Haru make it to the Holy Land where the Great Pilgrimage will take place and meet some one who will help them into the Quickening Chamber, an odd dome in the middle of the lake.

Dr. Kanba wants to prevent Midori's transformation but when Kakisu promises something, moves the whole thing up. Dr. Ryuzo gathers Midori's father and the general in a move to get her back. They will infiltrate the military base and get her out. However once they get inside, things go wrong. Midori has already been taken elsewhere, the general and her father are captured, Dr Ryuzo has found someone the commander's killed in a rage, and Kakisu wants Dr. Ryuzo to meet him at the Barador Memorial. Fusa, meanwhile goes to her husband's clinic to see the divorced papers signed and a forgiveness letter waiting for her. She runs to find Dr. Ryuzo to stop him from doing something stupid. In the North, Nakiami finds Captain Zeygend and he takes her and Yango to the Great Pilgrimage where Nakiami thinks she'll meet Lady Sannova. The man Akiyuki and Haru meet, takes them inside of the dome to see what is awaiting them. He tells them that the Northern emperor only comes every 1,000 years and that is when the dome opens for people to enter. Raigyo and Ishu finally meet the army in the north and plan how to enter the diamond tower, the place the emperor lives.

Raigyo, Ishu, and the anti-government army attack the diamond palace to get inside. On Sentan Island, Midori's father and the general find the commander's aide and are captured. Somewhere with Dr. Kanba, Midori is already half changed into whatever she is becoming. Dr. Kanba tries to cheer her up but fails as the ship starts leaving to go to the Great Pilgrimage. Dr. Ryuzo finally gets to the memorial after meeting his wife and having her wait at the clinic to take care of Nazuna. She rants about why she wanted to divorce Dr. Ryuzo. Kakisu is waiting at the memorial and tells Ryuzo that Midori is already gone. Then the commander wants to talk about the battle and why Dr. Ryuzo saved him when they were enemies. Dr. Ryuzo says he hadn't realized at the time and that it didn't matter. Kakisu wants Dr. Ryuzo to kill him and when the doctor won't, threatens to kill himself. Dr. Ryuzo tries to stop him, but in the end, holds a gun to the commander's head. In the north, the man tells Akiyuki and Haru what the people inside are waiting for. They are waiting to die so their Hiruko can go to stop the great darkness from coming. Akiyuki thinks it is cruel and stupid and the man makes them leave. He says it is their own choice to take their lives or not and no one can tell them differently. He says this is what Lady Sannova wants. Some where in her hidden city, the Lady Sannova, leader of the pale children, departs for the Quickening Dome. It is time for everyone to meet and for things to come to an end.

The southern army reaches the Great Pilgrimage and prepare to attack anyone with Mainsouls and their ships' bombs. Midori has completely transformed into a large oval-like humaform with one eye. Dr. Kanba tells her what he expects of her but her mind is trapped somewhere in the past and she doesn't know where she is. Nakiami on Zeygend's ship radios the 'Zanbani'. It has finally been fixed and, under the direction of Yunbo, heads for the place Ishu is. The anti-government army finally makes it inside the tower. On the way many people die, including someone close to Ishu, and when Ishu finally gets to the emperor's resting place, she fondly remembers one man who used to write poems. It is discovered the emperor is actually a humaform living in some sort of water tank. Ishu plans on using explosives to destroy him. In this episode, Nakiami tells why she left Sannova and why she wants to talk with her again. In the Quickening Chamber, there is a defense. Towers come from the ground to destroy the southern ships, guided by the man who forced Akiyuki and Haru to leave. The two try to make it to Haru's Kayak and leave the city. Just then, Midori is released to end the war.

This episode starts with Midori reliving a memory after her mother died and she became a cripple. It starts with a missing shoe that Midori believes Haru hid because she wouldn't need another shoe. The humaform emperor escapes the damaged tower and shoots into the distance. A wave of darkness completely blocking the sun's light covers the land. The Great Darkness has come. There is nothing the anti-government army can do to stop the emperor. He journeys to the Quickening Chamber to receive the Hiruko from the people willing to die. Akiyuki and Haru are getting ready to leave the area despite the dark when Haru hears her sister's voice. Midori is attacked but kills with her laser-like defense, unaware of what she is doing. Haru searches for Midori to find nothing she suspected. Haru tries to help Midori but when Midori comes to her senses, she believes there is no hope for her and tries to hurt her sister. Akiyuki is devastated when it seems Haru is lost. He starts turning to stone. Nakiami has to come and save the day by letting Midori relive a day in the past. Yango tries to stop the people in the Chamber from killing themselves but the man doesn't want to listen to him, believing these deaths are what Lady Sannova wants to end the Darkness.

Lady Sannova and Nakiami meet to discuss what happened when Nakiami left the hidden city. Nakiami says she is willing to take the purification test that she hadn't before. Sannova is willing to do it but before tells Nakiami about the emperor and how the Sannova line used to be midwives for the royal line. She tells how the emperor was born still born but a Hiruko seed was placed in him to make him live. After that, Sannova and the Tessik people were exiled. Now the emperor is back, looking for something to end the emptiness inside. Akiyuki faces him and recognizes him but has trouble remembering where. The emperor speaks to Akiyuki but wants to kill him because Akiyuki is the final enemy. Haru speaks to Akiyuki during the battle and he tells her to go back to Sentan Island to wait for his return. She goes, promising when he comes back to her, she will tell him something she wanted to for a long time. He promises the same to her. A rain starts to fall, turning whatever it touches, including humans, to stone. Lady Kujireik comes to the city with her people, there to fight and take their land by force. Back with Lady Sannova and Nakiami, Lady Sannova tells Nakiami why she and her children created Xam'ds. It was to have them all gather and fight the emperor but only two have shown up and one becomes injured. Down in the Quickening Chamber, Yango tries to stop the people from killing themselves, but the man is persistent and Yango stays. Sannova gives one last sacrifice that would bring smiles for a 1,000 years and Nakiami is needed to help. Akiyuki gives something of himself to the emperor that could be the ruin of himself, but it is in the effort to end the threat. Will all their plans work? The episode certainly ends with tears and questions.

This is the last episode. It starts with Akiyuki speaking with the emperor one last time and then reliving a memory in which Nakiami makes an appearance. Is it a memory or is Nakiami trying to help him still, now in another time he's forgotten himself? The Quickening Chamber starts to close for another 1,000 years. Yango is devastated and determined to stick around until then so he can see Nakiami once again. The Darkness lifts and all seems well. Nine years later. It is Akiyuki's 25th birthday but he isn't there to celebrate. Fusa and Dr. Ryuzo are back together again taking care of Nazuna who has awakened. Haru is now a substitute teacher at a school. Her hair is long again. Everyday she goes up on a hill to stand by a large stone that was once a humaform. She speaks to it about things she remembers. One day she tops the hill to see something different. At the Quickening Chamber Yango is still around and sees someone else Nakiami used to know. Someone else that is waiting for her to come back.
