An ordinary city boy goes with his father to visit his grandfather in the village. There he is met by not very friendly local boys and a girl with whom he immediately falls in love. His grandfather is constantly telling funny stories about his glorious military past, which open up a completely new, magical world for him, teach him the main values of life and make him a real man.

A Moscow schoolboy, third grade student Alyosha Ptitsyn decided to radically change his life: to get rid of the care of his grandmother and sister, not to succumb to temptations and live according to a strict routine. He made up a daily routine and began a new life: he got up, did exercises and went to school .

The Narrator finds himself with a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change his precarious lifestyle for a brand new life of never-ending lust and limitless power. But the price to pay is too high. He must surrender that which represents everything he has been up to that moment, that which defines him as a person: his ideas. He now must make a choice that will scar him for the rest of his life.
