In a seashore village, Esthappan's miraculous figure unfolds through the contradictory narrations of people.

A teacher temporarily replaces his dad as the principal at HOPE west side high school in Chicago. The Chicago high school reputation suffers from gun violence, drug activity and low-test scores that may force the superintendent to close the school. The principal has to make some hard decisions, but will it cost his life.

During a discussion about love and marriage on a train, Poznyshev (Oleg Yankovsky) announces that he murdered his wife. He then begins to tell another passenger his story and the circumstances that led him to kill her. In doing so, he talks about the decadence of his life before marriage and reveals his most personal thoughts and opinions.

War buddies Burr Winton and Dave Stewart retreat to Burr's cabin in the Canadian Northwest after Dave helps Burr pay a gambling debt. During the winter months, Jacques Fachard, a French trapper, and his daughter Manette, who have eluded the Mounted Police, seek refuge in their cabin. Fachard dies of a bullet wound, after having persuaded the men to care for his daughter. Both fall in love with Manette; Burr, deeply in love for the first time and eager to marry her, is furiously jealous and threatens Dave. Food shortage makes it necessary for Burr to seek aid. Manette, after having been defended by Burr, starts after him in the storm; but Dave stops her and brings his friends back and leaves them to their happiness.

Darren Prager is an aspiring writer who finds himself completely unable to comprehend the intricacies of human behavior. Obsessed with finding the key to understanding the nature of character, he turns a co-worker's family into the unwitting subjects of his new project. Darren's own humanity is soon put to the test when he goes beyond observational research to the realm of gross violation.
