When Love Beckons

The main character, nineteen-year-old Anastasiy Chizhov, was appointed commander of the Zver patrol ship. Under his leadership, the old fishing vessel becomes a strong fighting unit.

On a post-war peaceful day in Japan, Toyomatsu Shimizu, a barber as well as a good father and husband, is suddenly arrested by the Prefectural Police as a war criminal and sued for murder. According to the accusation by GHQ, Toyomatsu "attemped to kill a US prisoner", which was nothing but an order by his superior and failed after all with hurting the prisoner by weak Toyomatsu. Also, Toyomatsu was driven to corner at the trial by the fact that he fed the US prisoner some burdock roots to nourish him. Toyomatsu believes nothing but being not guilty, but he is sentenced to death by hanging. Prior to the execution, Toyomatsu writes a long farewell letter to his family, the wife and the only son: "If I ever incarnate, I hate to be a human being any more.... Oh yes, I would like to be...a shellfish living on the rock-bottom of the sea."

The film itself focuses on an Afghani family living in Queens, before and after the historical catastrophe. Federal agents abduct a friend of this family investigating money transfers to an uncle in Afghanistan during the reign of the Taliban. The son makes it his mission in life to release him. This situation is intensified by having to watch out for hate crimes carried out by angry commoners as a false sense of retaliatory attack for 9/11. What makes this setting all the more wild is that events depicted have been interpolated from a true story. The motion picture thus analyzes the effectiveness of profiling when it comes to terrorism, the validity of the "enemy combatant" claim when denying right to trial, and other pressing moral issues that will continue to be debated long after the now global conflict subsides.

The autumn of 1944. In the small remote village hides the former police officer Starshiyata. He finds shelter with a young widow. Gradually his ruggedness makes way for desire for human closeness. Kolyo tries to convince the peasants to take part in the organization of the new life. The people scare because the Starshiyata is still among them. Kolyo decides to handle the situation. His friend Vasil ventures to the neighboring village to get rifles. At the same time, Kolyo follows Starshiyata, but the latter kills him. The peasants are shocked. Vasil distributes the rifles. The men soon discover and surround Starshiyata. A shootout begins. A bullet hits Starshiyata and he falls from a hill.
