Happenstance is a trilogy of short films consisting of the stories of three couples and their relationships: their sweetness, challenges, possibilities; and the interconnected and dynamic nature of life and the choices it brings.

Joanna tries to prove to the world that she can cope with life, it turns out that she cannot. However, her defeat becomes her victory.

Edwin Drake, disowned by his wealthy father for lack of self-sufficiency, is unable to get a job and becomes a tramp. But after a prophetic vision, he discovers his better self and his regeneration begins. He obtains a job, quickly progressing to a key position. At the same time, Sarah Holmes is being taught to think positively by her friend, The Professor. Quite by accident, she meets Mrs. Drake, who takes a liking to her and treats her as her own daughter. One day Mrs. Drake is lamenting about her estranged son and shows Sarah a picture of Edwin. Sarah recognizes him as the young man who lives in her boardinghouse. She arranges for Mrs. Drake to be reunited with her now successful son, and eventually she becomes Mrs. Drake's daughter-in-law.

Heads of rival lumber camps meet in a fight. Louis Lenoir, a renegade French Canadian, causes the death of "Big" MacDonald, a hard-fighting Scotsman whose life is guided by his dogmatic religious beliefs. His son, Ranald, is left to settle the blood feud. In spite of the pleas of his sweetheart, the daughter of a minister, he participates in a gang fight on the logs in mid-river just as a log drive to Ottawa begins. Attempting to stop the fight, the girl becomes involved, falls into danger, and is carried toward a whirlpool; but MacDonald, having abandoned his attack on Lenoir, rescues her. At the finish Lenoir, grateful because his life has been spared, experiences a reformation.

Nelly Raintseva's life has been going on in very unfavorable conditions since childhood. Her father, a wealthy banker, was busy exclusively with his commercial affairs, and her mother was engaged in social flirtation.
