Marcel Hamelinck has a chronic muscle disease and therefore has to retire from his work. After his wife Denise dies, his attention is drawn to his daughter-in-law Simone. Obsessively he tries to make overtures, even at the expense of his own health. He gives her expensive presents and builds a pool to see her swim. After Simone allows him to touch her, Hamelinck only has one wish: to become her slave. Simone cleverly exploits the situation, while Marcel's condition slowly worsens.

Dans la maison voisine s'installent François (Melvil Poupaud) et Edith (Isabelle Carré). Ce dernier doit succéder à Jacques et reprendre sa clientèle. Jacques passe beaucoup de temps avec François pour lui transmettre sa succession. Carole et Edith, pendant ce temps, deviennent amies. Très vite, Jacques tombe amoureux d'Edith. Elle est tout d'abord émue par le trouble qu'elle provoque chez lui. Puis elle se met à l'aimer. Mais elle ne voit pas qu'elle est également "amoureuse d'elle-même en train d'aimer". Elle ne voit pas non plus qu'ils courent vers la violence des sentiments...
