Summary Extreme poverty has plagued the hardworking families living in Leon, Nicaragua, for many years. The majority of the families effected by the poverty live in 'settlements' on the outskirts of the city. Each morning, members of the settlement travel to the heart of the city selling baked goods, clothing, and newspapers to provide for their families. Every night they return to their homes made of plastic tarps, rotting wood or, if they are lucky enough, sheet metal. Michelle Chavez is a member of Techo, an organization that believes adequate housing is the first step towards self-reliance.
