The lead bombardier used a park in the city to calibrate his sights then accidentally released his bomb load. During World War Two the Allies began to realize that their aircraft losses in their strategic bombing campaign were unsustainable and began looking for ways to make the bombers more resistant to antiaircraft fire. Armed with data where planes were being hit from maintenance records they approached a team at the Columbia University. Abraham Wald prepared an analysis recommending introducing more armor to areas of the plane that did NOT show damage in maintenance records.
