Chinese American musician Wei Wende travels to Guangxi, China, to collect local folk songs, hiring tour guide Liu Tiantian to trace the roots of the legendary singer "Liu San Jie." While exploring the diverse ethnic musical traditions, their relationship is complicated by romantic misunderstandings.

Norman and Ethel spend the summer, as usual, in their log house by the lake. While Norman tries to hide the first signs of senility, Ethel tries to hide that he is not quite succeeding. Ethel puts up with Norman's whims, but finds it difficult to see through his irreconcilable relationship with daughter Chelsea, who is now coming to visit for the first time in eight years.
