French commander Dargonne is furious when captain Lebeau must report his troops failed to capture Tijl's brigands band, which took hold of the monastery, so orders him to redeem himself by grab them there. Tijl expects them, masquerading with his men as monks, and locks up first the sergeant, then his men in the basement by luring them to go seize an alleged monastic treasure.

Tijl meets two famous generals of the Campines rebellion, agreeing the cause looks bleak for lack of unity and means to take on the French occupation army. Tijl takes one along to show how he plans to steal money and arms from the enemy. The pair dresses up as French officers to visit a reputedly collaborating innkeeper. Tijl orders booze for a small fortune and decides to pay by assignations, the 'fake' money substitute no local accepts as payment. The publican eagerly agrees to gamble for payment in real coins, but Tijl cheats to multiply the stakes and ultimately ride off with rich loot.

Tijl decides to get married to Nele, consecrated by the local curate, who is outlawed like himself. The pro-french publican is forced to serve about all his provision to the grand party for all rebels. French commander D'Argonne, who plans to wed the aristocrat Adrienne himself, is informed and mobilizes his troops. Tricks on both sides cause each in turn to take hostages.
