Thierry de Slingeraar was in de jaren 60 een van de eerste grote tv-hits in Nederland. De Franse Robin Hood deed de harten van meisjes sneller kloppen, terwijl jongens ervan droomden net zo stoer te zijn als hij.

Het verhaal speelt zich af in de veertiende eeuw, als de Franse streek Sologne zucht onder het juk van de wrede prins van Wales. De situatie is des te ernstiger omdat er ook Fransen zijn die heulen met de vijand. Een van deze collaborateurs is ritmeester Messire Florent. Op een dag verraadt hij de jonkheer Thierry de Janville, die vervolgens gevangen wordt gezet in zijn eigen kasteel. Maar met hulp van enkele getrouwen slaagt Thierry erin te ontsnappen. Zodra hij weer op vrije voeten is, brengt hij een troep vogelvrijen bij elkaar. Samen gaan ze de strijd aan met de bezetters. Daarbij maakt Thierry bij voorkeur gebruik van een wapen waarmee hij zeer doeltreffend is: de slinger!
