My Son: The Sculptor

My Son: The Sculptor

Saraswathi, the 83-year-old mother recalls the life story of her son, who was paralyzed by Polio at the age of 2 and lost use of both legs, yet he overcame all challenges and went on to become a renowned sculptor. Stone is stone. Who could imagine God to be born out of it? None, but a devoted sculptor. One who can look at a block of stone and tell which God lives in it. One who can spend 12 hours a day, 7 days a week for 43 years tirelessly chipping away, bringing alive the God from blocks of stone. Living in India, this renowned sculptor has spent his life perfecting the art of creating God from earth, silently, passionately. Nothing could stop this determined, dedicated spirit from pursuing his true calling in life - neither severe polio attack that crippled his legs, nor absence of schooling. His path was ridden with many, many obstacles. For over 43 years, he has created beautiful sculptures depicting God in various forms. The craft is that of taking away unwanted portions of stone. One wrong chip on the stone and the sculpture could be ruined. He has chipped away on stone, day and night, creating spell-bounding sculptures. No wonder his dedication has made him among the most respected sculptors in India today. His journey towards perfection continues. Each of his sculptures is finer than the last one - even more perfect, even more alive. His 83-year old mother proudly watches him today as he chips away the stone, while narrating this astonishing true story.
