After the murder and rape of his sister, the only surviving member of his family. Rev. Frank loses his faith and undergoes a personal transformation.

Four childhood friends live at a ghetto in Jakarta whose bonds are tested as they grow into adulthood. They share a ritual, "chasing the sun" (Mengejar Matahari), where they race through the ghetto, symbolically chasing their future.

The film intercuts two stories, one in black and white, one in color. From 1965 to 1970.

Ceren, who unknowingly married Murat, the murderer of her parents, is admitted to a mental hospital because she is thought to have lost her sense of reality due to a game set up by Murat.
