Summary The Regulators are a secret society of African American men that was formed in the northern states during the early 1800s after the North abolished slavery. The new Freedmen found themselves in a world where they were seen as different from the rest of society and so they formed their own secret group to help themselves function as a community. The reason for staying secret was because they feared what the reaction of White America would be to their then existence.
