Aircraft in warfare had to rapidly evolve as air superiority became an essential requirement for victory in battle. Two years into World War I, the British fleet was being outgunned and outmanoeuvred by the newer German fighter planes. Equipped with a powerful rotary engine, and armed with twin synchronized Vickers machine guns, the Sopwith Camel was a formidable fighting machine. But these early fighter planes were difficult to control for the young and inexperienced pilots of the newly formed Royal Air Force.
