The Low Road

From Ghana to a deserted coast - from Morocco to Spain - out of desperate need, a group of West Africans dare the perilous journey to Germany. But their path to the promised land of satellite dishes and a better life is strewn with obstacles. In West Africa, the name "Anansi" means spider - a well-loved trickster. This ancient mythical character represents the survival strategies of a people who secure a future for themselves in spite of the most repulsive conditions. Anansi is an odyssey full of wonders and sacrifices, African mystic and a love that surpasses all borders.

Gizella Weisz is an middle-aged office worker, who gets a promotion one day. Her boss told her that a new outpost is waiting for her. There she would be heading a new section. She travels from place to another and finally arrives at her new outpost. It is a remote shed, where a half-insane co-worker is waiting for her. It is obvious that Weisz has not been promoted, but punished. However Weisz does not realize that herself. Without questioning she just accepts her promotion.

Olivier, a handsome but callow and moody young student, picks up an enthusiastic actress during a theatre rehearsal, and is introduced to her acquaintances -- a group of jaded rich kids who spend their time storming around the Riviera harassing passersby, throwing wild parties and following all the latest trends. When sexy Elke gives him the eye, he leaves the actress in the lurch and joins the gang for a decadent party aboard a yacht. However, Elke's wanton ways and Olivier's inexperience do not mesh. Charlie accidentally sets the yacht afire. The gang wreaks its vengeance by luring him into a dangerous contest of bravura on a construction site.

When it comes to Ken Matsudaira's Benkei, the one that stands out in memory is from the 2005 NHK Taiga drama "Yoshitsune". However, this production was a New Year's special that aired in 1997, produced by Toei, and directed by veteran filmmaker Akira Inoue, who had worked for Daiei. It has a strong entertainment flavor fitting for a New Year's production, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and genders. The performances of the supporting cast, such as Koutaro Satomi and Makoto Fujita, are also noteworthy.

Juana is a 12-year-old girl with learning problems and an inability to relate who will begin to affect the limits of her childhood bubble.
