The Hideaway

In this tragicomedy two Iranian refugees decide to impersonate as a gay couple in order to obtain asylum. But for the adventurous, but lonely Shahram and the serious journalist Abbas it is hard to live with their facade to the very end.

While living in Shanghai with his young son David, William Fielding is close friends with his secretary, Li Clung, after the death of his wife. Foo Chang, a trader, loves the young woman who cares for young David and kills Fielding when he assumes that she is the boy's mother. Li Clung takes the child to his grandfather in San Francisco, where he grows up and inherits the Fielding estate. Following David's marriage, Foo Chang tries to bribe David to help him bring a cargo of opium into the city, informing him that he is a half-caste. Without waiting to learn the truth from Li Clung, David takes his infant son and goes to Alaska. He is followed by his wife and his faithful servant Li Clung, who kills Foo Chang and explains that David's mother was not Chinese. Brought to his senses, David returns with them to San Francisco.

Ted Morton, the son of a wealthy banker, loses heavily at roulette and, urged to settle down by his gravely concerned parents, informs them that he is engaged to Kate O'Hara, a milliner. His parents object to the match, but Ted nevertheless marries Kate. The elder Morton then disinherits Ted, who finds work as an automobile salesman. Eddie Baker, a gambler with a grudge against Ted, lures him back to the wheel, and Ted loses $2,000 of company funds. He desperately tries to raise the money, but Kate loses another large sum betting on a horse. Baker regrets his malice and makes Ted's losses good, writing a check and giving it to Kate. Ted sees them together and, misunderstanding, takes a shot at Baker, slightly wounding Kate. She quickly forgives him, and the young couple soon wins acceptance at the Morton hearth-side, completely in the good graces of Ted's family.

The compelling, heartwarming tale of family members torn apart by their individual struggles. The only thing that can truly bring the family back together is a mother's dying wishes. With a lot of love, this family is about to learn the true meaning of the saying "the family that prays together stays together."
