1984. In the sultry, still sunny September of that Emilian rural district most soaked with catholicism and home-grown socialism, Elia, a teenager grown out of these horizons, lives with his parents: William, his father, who has got a strong ideological tendency to marxism, Maddalena, his mother, very prayerful, and his grandmother; with the ghost of his older brother Samuele, whos not coming back home since a whole year. It is harvest time in the small vineyard next to home, so the days of harvest begin and in order to give some help in the field arrives also Emilia, the nearly grown-up granddaugther of an old couple living in Elias same small town. The young woman decides to go back to her grandparents country town for a short time, to write her degree thesis and, in the meanwhile, to earn some money for a wee trip shes been planning for a while. Conceited and nonchalant, Emilia is a true revolution in the ordinary every day life of the provincial teenager but, in spite of everything, Elia will need just a few days to reawaken Emilias heart, which seemed to be submerged by disillusionment and a constant mediocrity

Jake Overstreet is a saxophone player who has reached a point in his life when he wants to start a family. The woman who he thinks is the love of his life makes porno films and is always away. He wanders the streets of San Francisco among the destitute contemplating his next move. As his sensitive inner life consumes him, the voice of his deceased mother consoles him. Jake begins to be managed by an ambitious Argentine woman who has opportunistic tendencies. As they work together to rebuild Jake's musical career, Jake falls deeper into despair. He loses commercial appeal and bad habits flourish. Will his music and ghosts from the beyond save him as he battles to stay loyal to his deeper senses amongst destructive modern forces?

The last student days before the redistribution. The linguist must go to a remote village to work as a teacher. The outlook is not good at all for the ambitious man who published his own story and is searching for the realization of a career in literature. Mihail is looking for the possibility that will let him in Sofia. He is from countryside; his diploma is not of the highest merit; his career as an author is still not established. He meets by chance a famous writer. Soon the attitude of Mihail towards the writer becomes colder,, since he understands that he was used as an object of description. Mihail sees the situation as a deal - he offers "material" for the writer's novel for a note, needed for him to stay in Sofia. The writer's uncompromising nature breaks the deal and Mihail is traveling to the village or maybe to himself.
