Earthy empath Ayana "Yaya" Dixon and saucy spitfire Angelique "Gigi" DeBlanc throw a surprise party for friend Aleja "Ally" Delgado - a worried workaholic - for her 28th birthday. Ally's too worried about her career prospects to partake in the celebration. Unbeknownst to them, a menacing stranger named Chelsea tries to lure the girls to their doom. Elsewhere, a mysterious woman named Ada keeps vigil over the girls. The morning after, the trio of ladies get a visit from Ada, who informs them that they are witches.
After finding out that she's a witch, a skeptical Ally tries to resume her normal day-to-day routine and head to work. However, a potential opportunity to move up in the professional ladder turns into a showcase for Ally's powers of projection when she inadvertently tries to kill her boss, Mr. Fairfax. Ally seeks refuge in a coffee shop, where she tests out her abilities of body manipulation on fellow patrons. Her fun is cut short by a visit from Ada, who encourages the sullen skeptic to embrace her newfound gifts. Chelsea pursues Ally.
In the next episode, Yaya's mind-reading skills are put on display when she hears the thoughts of others while riding the subway to her flower shop. Tired of being the "strong friend" to Ally and Gigi, the holistic herbalist vents to her employee and crush Coop, who has eyes for fellow co-worker Toni. Under Chelsea's command, a homeless man attacks Yaya on her train ride home. Ada seeks out Yaya to keeps tabs on Ally and Gigi.
When Kyle tries to move past the "friend zone' with Gigi, the sultry siren uses her powers of mind control to bewitch her lovelorn admirer into keeping their boundaries in place. Gigi heads to an art gallery mixer for her friend, Carmen. There, she enchants an array of new male suitors, both old and new. Hakeem - Gigi's misogynistic Twitter rival - almost falls on the receiving end of her powers, forcing Ada to intervene and chastise the young witch for using her powers for evil intent. Gigi meets Jules, a mysterious man from New Orleans.
After finding out that they share similar family heirlooms, Ally and Yaya realize they are more connected than they thought. When Gigi reminisces about her brief encounter with Jules, a jealous Kyle incites her fury (and her powers) by bringing up a painful memory from their past. The trio learn more about their magical ties and their bloodline. Ada counsels the girls on their powers.
Ally finally embraces her newfound powers and tries to cast some spells, to Ada's chagrin. Gigi's icy facade begins to crack when she tries to reconnect with father, Renee, to gain information about her deceased mother. Yaya faces a floral faux pas and some angry customers at her job. Ada teaches the trio a new spell. Coop and Kyle become unwitting pawns in Chelsea's mission to take down the newborn coven.
Under Chelsea's spell, Coop and Kyle lure Yaya and Gigi to their doom. Sparks fly between Ally and Carmen when they meet in a coffee shop. Sensing that her friends are in danger, Ally uses a spell to locate their whereabouts and comes to their rescue just in the nick of time. Ada, Ally, Gigi and Yaya finally come face-to-face with Chelsea.
