Strelsa Cane, a successful stock actress, comes to New York and meets with reverses in her endeavor to get a start on the New York stage. Through a ruse she finally sees Winthrope, a successful manager, who is impressed with her ability but demands that she make a dishonorable bargain with him as the price of stardom. She refuses. Put out of her room for non-payment of rent, she seeks refuge in a house to which she has found the keys. Steve, the brother of the owner, finds her and denounces her, believing she is the woman with whom his brother has an affair. Later he learns the truth and insists that he will marry her, but she has accepted the manager's offer in desperation. Her debut proves a big success and as she prepared to keep her part of the contract, Steve appears. In a fight with Winthrope, he is struck from behind the curtain by his discontented valet, and Steve and Strelsa decide to go West and begin all over again together.

Commissioner Tredwell is the law of the land and he gets whatever he wants with the help of hired guns and lackey lawyer Conners. The only one who publicly stands up to Tredwell is Beecham of the Clarion. Beecham has his paper burned to the ground and when he starts a petition to make Wyoming a state, taking the power away from Tredwell, he is killed. But when Kansas Kate comes in to visit her son Conners, she sees what is going on and she takes over the paper and keeps the pressure on Tredwill. With this Conners has mixed emotions, but the boys do everything they can to protect Kate and the paper.

Naomi grew up as an only child that got anything she wanted. And having the perfect life was still less than perfect to her. Being pretty, witty and smart, she thinks she has it all figured out. When given the option of being smart or playing the odds, she would always choose to use her smarts to beat the odds. Unbeknownst to anyone close to her, she has woven a web of deceit so intricate, that even with all her resources, she finds that this life she created is exhausting.
