Almar is stranded on the shore of an island in the Mediterranian sea, when his ship leaves without him. There he befriends the somewhat dodgy vagabond Windy, and falls in love for the first time, in the local young girl, Marta.

With abortion as the central issue in this political melodrama from Albania, viewers will react strongly for or against the heroine, depending on their own convictions. After an accomplished concert pianist discovers she is pregnant with her second child, she is dismayed and realizes that she will not be able to continue in her career and take care of a new baby as well. So she asks a committee of doctors for permission to have an abortion and is roundly taken to task for being a pampered intellectual. When asked if he would support an abortion, her husband says he "does not want to become a criminal." In the end, the concert pianist realizes that motherhood is, after all, more noble a calling than the concert stage.

Krushna, the only daughter of Aabasaheb Deshmukh, treats the river Krushna as her mother. Just as the river flows continuously providing life to everyone in its path, Krushna, too, is ever ready to help the people who live in her village. Her blissful life, however, is shattered when her husband turns out to be a man full of vices. He cheats the poor villagers for money and even causes the death of Krushna's father. Pushed to the limits, Krushna finds strength from the river-Goddess and takes it upon herself to get her husband to mend his ways.

Her education in a French convent school completed, plain Justine Spencer returns to New York. There she is shocked to discover that her mother Dodo is a flamboyant musical comedy actress with many male admirers. Dodo, on the other hand, is dismayed to find Justine priggish and dowdy. One of Dodo's suitors is Billy Ferris, who, in a fit of jealousy, murders her and slays himself. Out of pity, Cosmo Spotiswood, another admirer of Dodo, marries Justine, but soon tires of his platonic marriage and leaves for Europe. Upon his return, Cosmo finds Justine transformed. Under the tutelage of Dodo's maid Loti, she has bobbed her hair and donned fashionable apparel. Thus changed, Justine is surrounded by suitors. Stung by jealousy, Cosmo falls in love with his sophisticated wife.

Alejandro 'Ale' Villacano is a young associate lawyer who has landed a job at the prestigious law firm, Keefe Briar. As a former convict and an acquitted felon, he is an unlikely pick for the firm. Intent on forgetting his past and forging a new identity, Ale dedicates himself to being the top associate at the firm. Thus, he is reluctant to help an old friend in trouble. Only at the prodding of his mentor does Ale take the pro-bono case. For him, it's filing a few grievances against a local prison and then back to his new life. But for his client, it's a matter of life and death. No matter how much Ale tries to resist, the pull to do the right thing, to fight the good fight is too strong. Ensnared in a case of corruption, power and abuse, Ale must decide what kind of lawyer he is really meant to be.
