Summary Philip Grey, a young drunkard, loves Dorothy Barlow but realizes that his life style makes that love impossible. Charles Drayton, a New York attorney who bears a striking resemblance to Grey, comes to visit his relatives in the Kentucky hills and wins Dorothy's affections. When Charles's uncle George kills Dorothy's grandfather, a family feud is reopened between the Barlows and the Draytons. Grey implicates Charles in the murder, and the Barlows capture him and sentence him to hanging.
