Episode 1 • Feb 18, 2021

Once I Had a Love

Convicted for covering up for Kit Parker, her serial killer lover's, crimes, Karen Miller is released from prison. But, because of the nature of the murders she was associated with and because she eventually gave evidence against her boyfriend, she is released into witness protection and given a new identity: Emma Hall. Her protection officer Pete Guillory promises to guide her through this new life but warns her to live quietly here in the Louisiana bayou where her new home will be. He warns her not to draw attention to herself and above all, to never ever involve herself with young women - her boyfriend's choice of victim. However, she panics on her first night alone and ventures into the local town where she defends a girl against her tormenters. A strange friendship grows between the two until this troubled girl is later found dead. It triggers in Emma, previously locked, traumatic memories of her boyfriend's crimes and she starts to wonder whether she did more than just provide her killer boyfriend with an alibi. Meanwhile, Mary Barlow the grieving mother of Theresa, who she firmly believes is one of the victims of Kit Parker and his lover Karen Miller, receives a visit from John Tyler, a sexual predator desperate for redemption, and who proposes he use his dark crimes for good in the form of safety advice to women via the foundation Mary Barlow has set up in her daughter's name. But, triggered by the release of Karen Miller, Mary instead blackmails him to hunt down Karen Miller and bring her to the justice she appears to have escaped.

Burn Me When I'm Gone

Emma is in turmoil after the suicide of her lover, Kit and the death of Jess. She confides in Pete and takes him to the site of Jess' murder: but the body has gone. Pete worries Emma is becoming unstable again, and that she has hallucinated the murder of Jess and the crazed man in the bayou. Emma wrestles with doubt over what she saw while also experiencing horrific flashbacks that suggest she was involved with one of Kit's murders. The discovery of a hook in a sore on her leg, festering since her escape from the bayou shack, convinces her that she didn't imagine the horrors of last night. She begins to research the "swamp monster" Jess mentioned to her and discovers a dark mythology in the bayou. She makes a promise to herself to find the truth about Jess and the strange town of Saint James while once again crossing a red line in forming a strange connection with another young woman, Rose Lord, the bully of Jess. An unsettling question begins to form: if the memory of Jess is real then are the memories of the murder with Kit real too? While questions also form about Pete as he reveals a strange connection to the group home Jess disappeared from. Mary Barlow holds a vigil to raise awareness that her daughter, Theresa, is still missing believed dead at the hands of Kit Parker and his lover Karen Miller (now Emma) who is living free in witness protection. The vigil brings forward another grieving parent who believes his daughter was a victim of Kit Parker. John Tyler tracks down Karen/Emma's mother in a bid to glean information about where her daughter is. Instead he finds a fractured relationship led to Karen/Emma being fostered in Minnesota and learns that it is this foster mother who Karen/Emma was closest to. John believes the information is enough to have Mary release him from this twisted contract but she refuses to release him from her blackmail and John moves further from the path of redemption he so desperately seeks.

Someone Worse Than Me

Pete claims not yet to have followed up on Jess at Saint Jerome House. He's a stranger, it's difficult to ask those kind of questions without drawing Emma into it. Instead he drills down into the blackspot in her memory, a period of several days in Minnesota, before she was found with Kit and arrested. He thinks she's projecting that trauma onto the "death" of Jess. However when Emma learns, through her growing connection with a local cop, that Pete worked at the Saint Jerome House, the group home Jess lived at, she becomes wary of him and the increasing control he has over her life. Unsure who to trust, Emma makes contact with her past. But a chilling memory of her with Kit, and an unconscious Theresa, gives a whole new view of Emma. Mary receives a visit from Van Walker, a father of a missing girl he believes was also a victim of Parker. The girl disappeared at a festival in Minnesota, the same way other girls disappeared. Mary promises to help him and claims his daughter's disappearance has been overlooked because of racial bias. But Van's wife, Kamala intervenes and asks Mary to stop contact with Van who suffers with bipolarity and is unhealthily obsessed with Kit Parker, revealing that she has heard the truth from Kit herself. But to get his confession she had to give him a confession of her own - her infidelity. She allows Mary to listen to a recording of their meeting to satisfy her own obsession with Parker. But Mary picks up on Kit's suggestion that there is someone worse than him still out there and Mary uses this private information to further her own case that Karen Miller is his accomplice. But in doing so reveals Kamala's own secrets and begins to cross her own moral lines, bringing herself into conflict with her beloved son, Jake. John Tyler meanwhile is getting closer to who Karen/Emma used to be when he finds the vulnerable foster mother of Karen.

Episode 4 • Feb 18, 2021

I Don't Know You

Emma in freefall at her growing distrust of Pete. She changes the locks, avoids his calls. We see a flashback to how they met and the deal Karen made to gain witness protection. Their relationship disintegrates when she learns Pete lied about who the cabin belonged to and that it is his. When she finds an intimate picture of him with a young girl from his time at Saint Jerome House she fears for her own safety and moves into the storm shelter outside - where she finds items that hint at darker aspects of Pete's nature. Her growing paranoia derails the burgeoning connection with Tom who begins to ask about her life before coming to the town. While two key men in her life fall away, her connection to juveniles in the town intensifies as Emma digs deeper into the bayou mythology and the mysterious Abel through a friend of Jess' at the group home. Her relationship deepens with Rose who is secretly falling in love with her and hints at dangers in the town. A violent encounter over the cat she has stolen leads her to reach out again to Esther and learn of her death and then to flee the town in a vehicle she steals from Rose to get to Minnesota. We learn that Pete is married to the girl in the picture Emma found and that she was once his patient. John mines a growing intimacy with Esther as he draws out details that help him set the trap for Karen. Mary escapes the fallout of her exploitation of the Walkers and descends on Minnesota, surprising John on his mission. We see the beginning of a shift in the power dynamic of this relationship with John banishing Mary from contact with Esther but Mary sickened to learn that John has let Esther's confused mind believe he is her husband. Mary realising she has put this woman in possible danger goes to her to apologise. But her desire for answers leads to a terrible event, one secretly witnessed by John.

I Got Here by Myself

Emma arrives in Minnesota. She retrieves a photograph of a couple and an address from a lockup of Esther's. The address takes her to a house in which a four year old girl plays and as Emma secretly comes face to face with the girl we see they have the same unusually colour eyes, one blue one brown. This girl is her daughter, Freja. This is the secret Esther has kept. Pete and John attend Esther's funeral to wait for Emma who doesn't show. Emma and Pete confront each other over their suspicions of what the other has done and reach a new accord. Pete explains away the photograph and the eerie items in the storm shelter and there is renewed trust between them. Emma is forced to make an agonising decision - to leave her daughter in Minnesota and to try and win her back through completing her rehabilitation. Pete promises he will support her and piece back the memories she can't unlock from before Freya's birth. Mary rocked by guilt at what she's done loses herself in illicit sex with her younger lover but cannot escape what she's become. A murderer. John begins to exert a new control over her, secretly knowing what she did to Esther. When Mary chastises John for the failure of his plan to find Karen he drops chilling hints about his past. It leads Mary to discover a traumatic rape for which John has never been caught. Realising he has lied to her about the extent of his crimes Mary is driven to find her own protection against John. Rose hurt at Emma's abandonment goes to the cabin to take comfort in this space of Emma's. Instead she finds evidence of Emma's relationship with Tom and the truth about her former identity: Karen Miller. John's meticulous research on Karen sees him spot the telltale sign of her presence at Esher's grave and it leads him finally to her. But instead of alerting Mary, John keeps this secret and we sense he's going rogue and is on his own dark path.

I'm a Good Person

A new energy about Emma, determined to start over and be the person who will win back her daughter. She gives back the kitten she stole. She apologizes to Rose but now Rose knows she's lying about who she is so everything has changed. When Emma confides in Rose about Jess' death, Rose voices her fears that perhaps Emma was involved. Emma finally shows her true feelings for Tom and trusts him with the reveal of her daughter. It will be Tom who helps her move closer to the truth about Abel and the conspiracy at the heart of the town. Mary seeks confession for her sins and tries to call off the twisted relationship with John and cancelling his credit card. John seeks out the last of his family, his sister on her wedding day and tries to connect but she only compounds his disconnection with the world. Mary stares into her own abyss when she is banished from Theresa's swim hall, because of her exploitation of the Walkers, by the swim coach who represents so much of her daughter's success and offers a tangible link to her memory. But for Mary,'the end justifies the means and she must secure justice for her missing daughter. Emma's flashbacks to Theresa seem to support Mary's mission, suggesting Karen procured Theresa for her killer lover, Kit Parker. Mary must swallow everything she feels about John's past to keep him in pursuit of Karen Miller but she's about to discover that John knows far more about her than she does about him. And her world is about to fall apart again as she learns from police that her daughter's remains have been found in Minnesota. John moves further from his path of redemption. He believes Mary is to blame for pushing him back to his inner darkness. Mary has no idea of how far John has fallen and that he is now a huge risk to women again. Specifically to Emma who he finally comes face to face with.

Now You See Me

Emma wrestles with the news of Theresa's remains - found with a personalised necklace close to where Karen gave birth. She faces renewed questioning from and denies knowledge of the death. Pete believes this is the trauma that has caused her memory blackspots. When Caterina Keep, the local seer, senses Emma is troubled, it compounds the doubt she feels about her own nature and begins to question what she could be capable of. Tom tries to pull her away from her dark thoughts but Emma is struggling - her flashbacks of Theresa suggest Theresa was trying to warn Karen about Kit. Theresa was afraid of him. In a bid to make sense of her growing fear she did something to Theresa, Emma goes to Caterina Keep who begins to unlock a chilling memory of Emma in the Minnesota woods. The visit to Caterina brings about a horrific discovery - Tina Monro, the troubled girl from Saint Jerome house is in a distressed state and heavily drugged at the same motel. The mystery of the town is getting darker and seems to be connected to Rose's father, Bodie. It compounds when Emma finds an eerie gift at her cabin: Jess' cellphone and a message scrawled: truth. Mary copes with the news of Theresa by cutting off the past and clearing the house of everything she has preserved about Theresa. Jake finds one of these is a photograph album in which pictures of her swimcoach are defaced. John begins to draw the net around Emma by inveigling himself in Tom's life and therefore Emma's. Enjoying the new dynamic with Mary, he acts as a twisted mentor to keep her on the search for Karen. Mary is done. This is over and she tells John to get on with his life. She reconnects with her estranged husband in a bid to feel connected to life before Theresa and cleanse herself of the things she's done, but her wounds cannot heal. She finally agrees to the memorial for Theresa her family have been pushing for. But this grieving mother is lost to everything except the need for revenge.

Episode 8 • Feb 18, 2021

Be Mine

The FBI close in on Emma for questioning over the remains in Minnesota. Emma pursues the truth about Jess - unlocking Jess' phone reveals calls to one local number. Calling the number puts Emma firmly in the sights of Bodie Lord. John gleans information from Caterina about what Emma shared with her. Emma confides finally in Tom, about Jess and Tina, brings comfort and shock - he knows who she was and wants one assurance: did she help Kit Parker? And Emma cannot give him an answer he needs: she hopes not. Tom, in trying to dig into the Carlton Lodge Motel falls into John's web and is abducted. Emma now without Pete or Tom continues to try and make sense of the past by reconnecting with the boss of the Minnesota hair salon she worked at. From Marnie she learns that Kit was having an affair with Theresa before Emma met her and that's why the salon workers hated him. Emma now makes sense of everything and goes to Pete to confess: she killed Theresa because she found out about her affair with Kit and that's what she has blocked out. Pete now reveals that the body in Minnesota isn't Theresa's but Amy Walker and asks if Emma ever knew her. Emma in freefall has no recollection of this woman but in a final flashback we makes sense of the fragmented murder scene we have viewed through the season. It is Amy Walker on the Minnesota apartment floor and Karen stands over her with a hammer. Mary puts the house up for sale and moves in with her Adam for a hedonistic escape from her pain. She attempts a confession but his innocence cannot cope with the dark truths Mary holds inside. When she receives news that the body in Minnesota is not Theresa's, Mary frees herself of all morality and realises the only person she can be honest with is John. She is trapped in this twisted relationship with this deadly dangerous man who lets himself into Emma's cabin with his stolen key and lies in the bed beside her, watching her as she sleeps a sleep of nightmares.

Gotcha

Emma makes sense of Kit's use of a question mark tattoo on women he would later go on to murder. Her flashback is of Amy Walker with a question mark tattoo. Pete suggests it was not a heart Kit was tattooing on Karen but a question mark and the needle slipped. They realise Kit meant to kill her and instead fell in love with her. Pete suggests memories formed in a traumatic state can only be recovered in a traumatic one. He suggests the trauma of witnessing Amy Walker's dead body has caused the memory blackout. Jay brings prescription drugs that Jess used to take and that he also found in Tina's room. Another disturbing link between the two girls. Emma receives a visit from Lisa, Pete's wife who accuses her of having an affair with Pete. Emma reassures her she's not and digs into Lisa background as a Saint Jerome House girl. Lisa reveals the true darkness is an exploitation ring, girls at the home are harvested for their eggs for fertility treatment led by Bodie Lord. The girls are made sterile often from the invasive procedures. Emma warns Rose about her father but has no idea of the reaction she sets off in Rose whose advances Emma rejects and who later reaches out to Mary's tipline on Karen Miller. Jake Barlow recognises John Tyler from a facial composite for a man wanted for a rape in Missouri. Mary calls John on the rape and he warns her not to do anything stupid - not now he's found Karen. Mary hates herself but stays silent. However Jake reports the rape and John goes dark on Mary. Emma has no idea that every text she sends to Tom is being read by John who pretends to reply as Tom and arranges to meet Emma. John invites himself back to her place where Emma discovers he has Tom's phone and her cat's missing collar. In her attempt to escape him, traumatic memories unlock and we see the entirety of the Minnesotan murder scene and that it was Theresa who was attempting to murder Karen in the snow, just before she gives birth.

Episode 10 • Feb 18, 2021

The Dead Come Back

Emma fights to escape a terrifying John Tyler who she now knows is a serial sexual predator and has hunted her down on behalf of Mary who will come into a scene of brutal destruction and find Emma bound and gagged and feels guilt at what she has done. Emma tries to warn her John is still here but Mary is sure the cabin is empty. John make a chilling return and the two women kill him to survive. In the disposal of his body Emma is forced to tell Mary the truth. But it is a truth she doesn't want to hear. Emma is not the monster who took her daughter, she's the monster who replaced her. She reveals Kit and Theresa were in a relationship before she ever met Kit. And it was Theresa who came into her life. She tells Mary that Theresa held her own damaging secrets about abuse she suffered from a young age at the hands of her swim coach. Mary is destroyed by this and swears to tell the truth about Karen Miller so Emma can live safely in the open again. Mary reneges on this, unable to crucify Theresa to the world, and instead reveals Karen's new identity and declares her Theresa's murderer, pointing to violence she herself suffered at Emma's hands. Emma is forced to flee Saint James after rescuing Tom and she heads to Minnesota only to find that Theresa has been visiting Freya since her birth and Freya is gone. We find her in a new wilderness swearing to track down her daughter and bring Theresa to justice. Mary wreaks her own revenge on Theresa's swim coach. Pete is revealed as Bodie's fixer and Bodie meets John Tyler's version of justice and, as the body of Jess resurfaces in the bayou waters and is returned to the town on the biggest night of the year - the Festival of Saints - by her protector, the swamp dweller Abel, Rose is revealed as the killer of Jess in defence of her father's honour. And we pickup Theresa humming soothingly to Freya, the child she has taken and who, Theresa tells her, has her father's eyes.

Dearie Lane loves Fred Millard, but she turns down his offer of marriage because she was once involved with the disreputable Mark Winfield. When she explains the situation, Fred forgives her, and they get married. For a while they live happily in a modest home. But the situation gets complex when Winfield, who owns the house, comes by to collect a delinquent payment and suddenly dies. Dearie, afraid that Fred will not understand what really happened, gets a boarder and her cook to help her hide the body. At midnight they carry it down the stairs to the countryside, but Fred hears their steps creaking on the stairs. All seems lost when the police find the body and the suspicious Fred finds Winfield's hat under a couch. He opens Dearie's private trunk and discovers the fancy clothes that Winfield gave her. Fred goes after Dearie, furiously chopping with an ax through the closet door behind which she is hiding. Dearie persuades him to listen and explains that she had kept the clothes only because she thought Fred would admire them, and that in fact Winfield died from a heart attack.
