Strange Powers: Stephin Merritt and the Magnetic Fields

In 1974, Texans Mark and Andy Godfrey, aged 11 and 8 respectively, went on a family ski vacation to Aspen, CO. The plane they were traveling on crashed in the mountains taking the lives of their parents and brother and sister. The Godfrey project is a documentary film that explores the events of the crash as well as how it affected Mark and Andy for the the rest of their lives. It's about resilience, courage, perseverance and discovery. It's ultimately a film about how the twin beacons of love and family can help overcome even the greatest of losses.

This story is based on numerous real-life stories of those who chose to stay unnamed. A young provincial girl full of vitality is dancing to a popular love song. She doesn't even suspect that soon, when she will go to conquer the capital, she will meet a man, and that this meeting will break up her bright dreams. The heroine will turn into "that woman" - the one who is dependent from His money. She will have to walk the long difficult way full of pain and frustration. She will completely lose her hopes and herself for the sake of wealth. But the question is will she find the strength to escape from the neverending waiting, emptiness and humiliation? Is she still capable to do this step after so many years of being "kept"?

When this film's director was still a boy, he stood in front of "Flotel Europa" and was hugely excited about the prospect of this gigantic ship moored in the port of Copenhagen becoming a new home for him, his mother and his older brother. Together with about 1000 other refugees from the former Yugoslavia, they started life anew on the ship. Like many families did in the early 90s, they used to send video messages on VHS to the father, who had stayed back home: footage of the communal kitchen, the windowless cabin, the TV room, excursions made with cool new friends, a dance performance by the unattainable Melisa. Director Vladimir Tomic could have just used this material to illustrate a lost childhood and the squalor of refugee life, but by editing it together and drawing on his memories of that time, he succeeds in creating something new, something of his own, something special. The shift in perspective from internal to external turns "Flotel Europa" in an autobiographical film about a difficult lot, which is all the more touching because it liberates the refugee from the role of the victim - and transforms a shy young man into a lovable film star.

For the Record tracks several stenographers as they strive to break the Guinness record and seize the title of World's Fastest Court Reporter. It also explores the steno culture, the connections people make as 'interpreters' of the hard of hearing, and ins and outs of court reporting and captioning.
