During a bout of writers block, struggling writer Emmett Shelby happens across Jess Spencer, a fellow writer facing the same problem. After a fateful day together, the two part. But, reunited a year later, Jess is introduced to Emmett's extended circle of family and friends - his sister Daisy, her live-in boyfriend Barney Fields, their narcissistic landlord Hugh Darvill, and Daisy's eccentric agent and self-appointed friend Jenny.
