Summary Sodura is a young woman from the Tsaatan, the reindeer people of the eastern Mongolian taiga, a formerly nomadic tribe who have now settled. As a little girl, she relocated to the big city when her parents died, but growing up there she found herself unable to adapt to the city lifestyle, and ran away from an abusive lover, returning to her home in the taiga, heartbroken. Her tribe blames her coming home pregnant with outsider's child. The only person who understands her pain is a childhood friend. Sodura falls in love with him, but he is engaged to a girl from a western tribe, in a marriage arranged by his father the tribal leader, to diversify their bloodline because inbreeding is bearing too many retarded children and the tribe is in danger of perishing. Tribesmen discover illegal poachers who have killed all but three of the endangered moose of the taiga, and one of the tribe is suspected of aiding the poachers. Sodura contemplates aborting the baby, but decides to ask the help of the tribe's shaman who suggests Sodura should be the one to go on envoy to preserve the life of the reindeer people of the taiga.
