Afraid of marriage, Simone (Mary Ellis) breaks off her long term engagement with her fiancé Paul de Lille (Tullio Carminati). Paul heads to the top of The Eiffel Tower with thoughts of suicide. In another part of Paris and also afraid of marriage, Mignon (Ida Lupino) breaks it off from her young lover (James Blakely). Despairing, Mignon also climbs to the top of The Eiffel Tower intending to leap to her death. There she meets Paul and the two compare stories. After discussion, Paul dissuades her from leaping and the two conspire to make their respective partners jealous by pretending to have an affair with each other.

A studio publicist discovers a Minnesota skating teacher and takes her to Hollywood. She goes back to Minnesota, but he follows her.

Charlotte Lord, a widow in her early forties and owner of Manhattan's smartest modiste shop, is about to marry Guy Barton, a wealthy businessman. The marriage has the full approval of Charlotte's three daughters, Jane, Marilyn, and Leni, and their two friends, Lois and Mary Wilson. But Mexican divorces have been declared illegal, so Guy is still married to Sybil Barton, an unscrupulous gold-digger who left him 12 years earlier. She demands that Guy give her $250,000 for his freedom. The Lord girls plot with the Wilson girls and their older brother Steve, with whom Jane Lord is in love. They want to have Sybil declared incompetent so that Guy will have grounds for an American divorce. All of their schemes fail and the girls decide that the only thing that will divert Sybil from her extortion purpose is if she becomes involved with a man even richer than Guy. To this end they invent a fictitious Argentine, name him "Don Pablo" after a name they see on a cigar wrapper. They inveigle Steve Wilson to impersonate this South American millionaire who is to sweep Sybil off her feet. Later, a Buenos Aires millionaire named Don Pablo is greatly surprised when he reads in a newspaper that Guy Barton is suing his wife Sybil for divorce, and naming him co-respondent, and he decides to fly to New York and check this out.

Gerard, a young man from a "good family," dreams of becoming an actor. To do this, he follows everywhere his sister Frédérique who is infatuated with cinéma vérité.

"Dapper Dan" Franklin (Frank Albertson) and his small troupe of actors become stranded in the small town of Harmony, Tennessee. The town is shackled by Blue Laws imposed upon it by a City Council under the influence of their domineering wives. Harry Cheshire is under the thumb of his sister Abigail Uppington (Isabel Randolph). One look at "Pappy's" daughter Clementine (Lorna Gray), and Dan decides to stay in Harmony... Blue Laws or not. "Pappy" confidentially tells Dan he can't be chased from town if he buys any piece of property and even gives him the cash to but a worthless lot behind City Hall, where the troupe sets up their headquarters. But through a mix-up Dan has accidentally brought the City Hall... and times will be changing in Harmony.
