Shadows of Suspicion

While visiting a small village, popular young artist Robert Williams meets innocent country girl Helen Sanderson and, enchanted by her beauty, induces the girl to pose for him. An attraction develops between them, but just as the portrait is completed, Robert is called back to the city. Helen fails to hear from him again and Robert's neglect draws her to the city, where she is sent to a reformatory on a false charge. Once released, she begs Judge Princeton for help and, feeling sorry for the unfortunate girl, he introduces her to playwright George Wendbourg, who adopts Helen and makes her a great actress. Seeing Helen on stage reawakens Robert's love for her and he begs her for forgiveness. After initially snubbing him, Helen relents and the two finally are reunited.

Stage-struck Georgianna Lane leaves her country home for the bright lights of the city. Once there, however, she fails miserably and contemplates suicide. Meanwhile, Hope Van Alen, the wife of wealthy Anthony Van Alen, is suffering from drug addiction and decides to enter Dr. Pope's sanitarium for a cure. Coincidence brings the couple into contact with Georgianna, who bears a striking resemblance to Hope. To deceive their friends in Hope's absence, the Van Alens enlist Georgianna's acting abilities in impersonating Hope. The switch is made and Georgianna performs so well that Anthony's nephew Gerald Fownes finds himself falling in love with her. When the real hope suddenly returns, cured, Gerald is bewildered. Explanations are made and Gerald joins Georgianna, who has contentedly returned to her country home.

Lawrence Payne stars as Major Kellor, a well respected and decorated officer who is being court-martialled for the murder of his commanding officer Colonel Winch. The facts of the case are shrouded by the mayhem of war and the effects that fear, pressure and duty have upon a soldier. Did the Major covet the Colonel's wife? Was the Major ambitious and kill Winch to secure a promotion? Or had the Colonel cracked under the pressure of an illustrious battle career? To prove his innocence Major Keller must rely on the evidence and testimonies given in court, however when he himself is the only witness, his word may not be good enough to win his freedom.
