During a discussion about love and marriage on a train, Poznyshev (Oleg Yankovsky) announces that he murdered his wife. He then begins to tell another passenger his story and the circumstances that led him to kill her. In doing so, he talks about the decadence of his life before marriage and reveals his most personal thoughts and opinions.

War buddies Burr Winton and Dave Stewart retreat to Burr's cabin in the Canadian Northwest after Dave helps Burr pay a gambling debt.
