On Pentecost Sunday 2014, the caver Josef Häberle had an accident in the Riesending shaft cave near Berchtesgaden. With a life-threatening head injury, he lies at a depth of more than 1000 meters - and more than 12 kilometers from the shaft entrance. Fellow climber Ralf Sommer fights his way back to the surface to alert rescuers while two other companions try to keep the injured man alive. The mountain rescue service assumes responsibility from minute one, but without any knowledge of the Riesending cave and without expertise in salvaging from this depth. Ralf Sommer sees only one chance to save his comrade: a call for help to the international caving community.

Cave explorer Josef Häberle lies deep in the Riesending cave in Untersberg near Berchtesgaden with life-threatening injuries. Hundreds of rescue workers are waiting for the rescue to begin. But the dimensions and challenges of the cave make the undertaking seem hopeless. The unprecedented action turns out to be an incredible thriller between powerlessness and helpfulness, expertise and activism, media and politics. It takes diplomatic skill and a skilful move on the part of mountain rescuer Helene Rechlin to clear the blockade and start the rescue of the injured person. A masterpiece of climbing technique, logistics, daring and coordination and one of "Europe's finest moments".
