Emily has only ever known what her husband's family has allowed her to...beginning with when she was "rescued" by her mother-in-law, Ms. Patricia. After being exposed to the truth and recently losing her one trusty friend, Rusty the wolf, she decides to make a break for it when an opportunity arises and she sees a family about half a mile downriver. Throughout her journey, she must overcome the dangerous slopes of the rocky terrain, a mountain lion, and her husband's tracking techniques. All the while, her past returns to her through traumatic flashbacks. An injured Rusty returns to her as well, to face-off against the ferocious cat during the stormy night. Once she finds the town, she is escorted to the police where she meets Detective Warner, who has been working with Detective Ryan for years to solve the cases of missing women and children at the border.

A Japanese girl (Kato Youki) is on a three month visit in Taiwan after breaking up with her boyfriend to study Chinese at a language center. One day she has a brief affair with Wu and later he requests her to sign a contract to be his girlfriend for 90 days and she agrees. One of the condition of the contract is they must get separated after 90 days. Peter Keller, who lives in Berlin, receives a letter from his homeland, the Swiss Emmental. Otto Balsiger, who had served in the army as a soldier under Keller's command, is accused of raping and murdering a woman and asks Keller for help. Keller, who firmly believes in Balsiger's innocence, tries to find out the true background to the crime on his own. However, his investigations quickly make him unpopular with the villagers, and it seems he can't trust anyone. Only Josef, an old friend of Keller's who has since become the leader of a religious sect, and Uta, the mayor's daughter, seem to be honest and friendly to him.
