Standa Pekárek finishes compulsory military service and becomes a chauffeur at communist Czech TV in 1971 dreaming of his own Volga (Volha). Willing to do anything to fulfill his dream he agrees to be a spy under code-name Volha.

This story began in 1986. Perestroika was already underway, but the Soviet Union had not yet collapsed. It was a time when there was no Internet, hypermarkets and even mobile phones, but they drank water from the tap, there were no traffic jams in Moscow, and the keys to the apartment were quietly left under the rug.

Californian veterinarian Kentucky Jones learns his late wife had adopted a Chinese boy Ike, age 9. Handyman Seldom and the local Asian community help him adjust to being a new dad. Social worker Edith Thorncroft looks in on things.
