Pureza: The Story of Negros Sugar

Summary At the start of the twentieth century, a small province-island earned the moniker 'Sugar Bowl' when it became the sugar capital of the Philippines- the Island of Negros. The 'Sugar Barons: came to signify the birth of sugar elite, a force which transcended into the national and political and social arena. A little more than half a century later and after a number of dismal events, the industry is presently in a wretched ailing state. Analysts now refer to it as a 'sunset industry.' The lives of around 3 million people in the island, indirectly and directly involved in the industry, are in peril.
