A teen girl is trying to find herself and make a new home out of a planet humans now share with aliens that have the ability to control human minds. Life on planet Earth ceased to exist on January 1st, 2000, after a Y2K code malfunction launched all of the nuclear bombs on the planet. Alex Hart, a human girl, sets out to join a sea expedition crew to survey the new planet humans and Kir, an alien species, have been relocated to. This new planet, Aeterra, is tidally-locked to another world in its galaxy and, therefore, does not experience the phenomena of day or night. "The Nightlands" are the name for the half of the globe that spans beyond where sunlight will ever be able to touch. As both Humans and Kirs have only recently arrived on this planet by mysterious means, nobody knows what is out there. Captain Charlotte is heading the crew that will put these waters on the map and, ideally, learn more about the origins of their relocation. Apollo, a Kir cartographer on the expedition, decides to let Alex join the team as his apprentice. A bond between Apollo and Alex begins to form. Upon getting settled on the ship, Alex meets a stowaway Kir on a desperate mission. The stowaway, Yunoire, reveals that she has been researching humans, kirs, and this planet that they've been "assigned." Yunoire also reveals that Kirs may have the power to manipulate human minds. Alex seems to trust Yunoire and agrees to do what she can to steer the expedition toward the mysterious super-storm that resides in the seas of the Nightlands. Alex struggles with juggling these new relationships, and this new information as "The Sunset" sets sail.
