Chiu Kang Chien was born in Gulangyu, Fujian, China and moved to Taiwan in 1949. He was a writer and director, who often worked in Taiwan and Hong Kong. He won the Golden Horse Award for Best Screenplay for Full Moon in New York (1989) and Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Screenplay for Love Unto Waste (1986) and Boat People (1982). He died of heart disease on November 27, 2013 in Beijing, China.
