Mayuzumi Rintaro was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1953. He is the eldest son of the popular composer Mayuzumi Toshiro (1929-1997) and his mother was actress Katsuragi Yoko (1930-2007).
After graduating from the Gakushuin University's department of literature in 1975, he joined NHK.
He debuted as a director with the 1984 20 episode serial drama "Hanamaru Ginpei".
