Prior to becoming director, she held various roles within the agency, including deputy director from 2017 to 2018 under Mike Pompeo. Haspel made history as the first woman to become CIA director on a permanent basis, having initially served as acting director following Pompeo's transition to U.S. secretary of state in April 2018.
