Ferdinand Walsin Esterhazy, a former French Army officer, gained notoriety for engaging in espionage for the German Empire. His actions wrongfully led to Captain Alfred Dreyfus being accused of treason in 1894. Despite being revealed as the actual culprit, Esterhazy controversially received an acquittal in a closed military trial in 1898. After retiring as a major, he fled to the United Kingdom and resided in Harpenden, Hertfordshire until his passing in 1923.
