Bachendri Pal is an Indian mountaineer who became the first woman in her country to climb the highest peak in the world, Mount Everest. Her determination to follow her passion against all odds has been an inspiration not only to women aspiring to take up mountaineering but also to the youth in general. She belongs to a humble background and has achieved everything in her life, be it completing her higher studies or pursuing an unconventional career, through hard work. After completing several smaller ascents, she joined the expedition to the Everest in 1984. When an avalanche injured almost half of her team members, she was the only woman who remained on the team. Continuing with her journey, Pal reached the peak of the Everest and thus etched a proud moment in the nation’s history. Following the summit, she continued to lead various expeditions, trained aspiring mountaineers and river rafters, and worked as a guide. A 'Padma Bhushan' awardee, Pal is currently employed with 'Tata Steel,' where she conducts training workshops for corporates and individuals. She has visited several national and international schools to develop leadership skills, eventually helping professionals, students, the rural youth, and the underprivileged.
