(Socialite) Mary Anna Custis Lee was a well-educated woman who edited and published her father's writings. She married Robert E. Lee in 1831. Throughout the American Civil War, she was separated from her husband and sought refuge with different family friends. Following the war, she was unable to reclaim Arlington House, which had been confiscated by the federal government. Robert E. Lee went on to become the president of Washington College. Mary Lee passed away in 1873.
