Frances Harper

Frances Ellen Watkins Harper was a prominent American abolitionist, suffragist, poet, temperance activist, teacher, public speaker, and writer. She was one of the first African American women to be published in the United States, making significant contributions to literature. Harper taught at Union Seminary in Columbus, Ohio, and wrote anti-slavery literature while living with William Still, a clerk at the Pennsylvania Abolition Society. She was actively involved in the American Anti-Slavery Society and became a successful poet and author. Harper held leadership roles in national progressive organizations, where she advocated for social change and women's rights.
