Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt was the First Lady of the United States during 1901-1909. She was the second wife of President Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th President of the US. Born in Connecticut, she was raised in New York. She grew up and studied with the Roosevelt siblings and shared a close bond with Theodore Roosevelt. Later, the two once again came in close contact after the death of his first wife, Alice Lee. After her marriage to T.R., Edith supported him with her valuable insight on governance, army and politics. She became the ‘First Lady of New York,’ when T.R. was elected the Governor of New York. As the First Lady, she brought in many changes. She was the first ‘First Lady’ to institutionalize the roles and responsibilities of the First Lady, and also the first one to have an official staff of her own. She also arranged to modernize and renovate the White House. As the First Lady, she was known for her organizational skills. She died at the age of 87.
