He founded the experimental commune Brook Farm in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, which later transitioned to a model based on the work of Charles Fourier. After its failure, Ripley worked for the New York Tribune and published the New American Cyclopaedia, achieving financial success. He became renowned as an arbiter of taste and literature, solidifying his national reputation before his death in 1880.
