(Sailor) Jan Joosten van Lodensteyn, also known as Yayōsu in Japan, was a Dutch navigator and trader who played a significant role in early Dutch-Japanese relations. He was one of the first Dutchmen in Japan and served as the second mate on the Dutch ship De Liefde, which was stranded in Japan in 1600. Jan Joosten remained in Japan and became a diplomatic advisor and interpreter to the Tokugawa shogunate, focusing on trade and economic matters. He was also involved in the shuinsen trade in Asia, contributing to the development of trade networks in the region.
