(explorer) Dirk Hartog was a 17th-century Dutch sailor and explorer who led an expedition to Australia. His crew was the second European group to land in the country, and he left behind the Hartog Plate as a record of his visit, becoming the first to do so. Dirk Hartog Island in Western Australia is named in his honor to commemorate his significant contributions to exploration.
